Pioneers rout Jets

BARTLESVILLE —  — Defending national champion Western Oklahoma College pounded out 14 hits, including a grand slam by Rafael Pena, in run ruling Northern Oklahoma College Enid 13-3 in a first-round game of the Region 2 junior college baseball tournament Thursday.

The Jets, 35-22, will play NOC Tonkawa, who lost to top-seeded Murray State, at noon today. If NOC Enid loses, it’s out of the tournament. The two NOCs split a four-game series last week.

The Jets will have to win five games to advance to the district tournament next week at Dodge City, Kan.

“Our backs are against the wall,’’ said Jets assistant coach Scott Mansfield, “but we have a tough-minded team. We’ll see how it works out.’’

The Pioneers, down 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, quickly put the game away with four runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, six in the sixth and one in the eighth to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Pena’s grand slam was the big blow in the fourth to give Western a 5-3 lead. The bases were loaded after a walk and two singles.

“The big innings took the wind out of our sails,’’ Mansfield said. “You can’t give those guys any extra outs like we did. Zac (losing pitcher Postoak) got the ball up a couple of times and they have good enough hitters to take advantage of those mistakes.’’

Shawn McAndrews was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Hazael Wessin was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Elvis Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with two RBI, including a solo homer in the fifth.

Winning pitcher Skyluar Neal scattered eight hits over six and two-third innings, striking out two and walking two. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned.

Losing pitcher Postoak allowed eight hits and six runs, all earned, in four and two-thirds innings. He struck out five and walked three.

The Jets scored all three of their runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

Christian Faulkner led off with a double and scored after a walk to Harper and Tyler Wilkins reaching on an error. Tanner Cruts singled in Harper and Logan Glasgow, who had two hits, singled in Wilkins.

The Pioneers, in the sixth, took advantage of two errors, a hit batsmen, two walks and RBI singles by Sherman Lacrus and Wessin.

Car Aguirre looks strange confined to a wheelchair.
The story of how the newly-minted Hennessey grad got there is told loosely through a digital jigsaw puzzle — an accident, a near-tragedy, an outpouring of support, a recovery, all expressed in Facebook posts and internet traffic.

Melton was the Majors’ opening-day starter, introducing himself to Enid with six strikeouts in three innings, topping 90 mph with a fastball that rarely ended anywhere but Beaver’s mitt in a 7-1 Majors win.
