EHS cagers return home ... finally

ENID, Okla. — The Enid Pacers and Plainsmen basketball teams will be home for the first time since Dec. 15 to begin a stretch of four-straight home games when they face Woodward tonight at the Mabee Center. Tip-off for the Pacers is set for 6:30 p.m. with the Plainsmen to follow at about 8 for the homecoming contest.

The Pacers are coming off a runner-up finish Saturday in the Bruce Gray Invitational at Deer Creek Edmond. Enid recorded victories over Star Spencer (59-43) and Putnam City North (47-35) before falling in the finals to host Deer Creek, 42-33.

The Pacers’ loss in the finals snapped a four-game winning streak.

It also was the Pacers’ first loss since falling to host Muskogee 68-66 on Jan. 12 in the finals of the Muskogee Bedouin Shrine Classic.

Senior Courtney Chelf averaged 19.7 points per game during at the Bruce Gray Invitational and was joined by teammate Haven Bay on the Bruce Gray All-Tournament team.

The ninth-ranked Pacers (13-3), undefeated in three games at home, defeated tonight’s opponent, Woodward, earlier this season 60-53 at Woodward. Chelf, with 24 points, was one of three Pacers in double figure scoring, along with Grace Enmeier (12) and Haven Bay (10). They will be without freshman Andi Pierce, who was injured prior to the Bruce Gray Invitational in a four-wheeler accident in which she suffered a concussion and a fractured right shoulder.

Woodward’s Lady Boomers are 3-14 overall this season and lost two out of three over the past weekend at the Newcastle Tournament, fallling to Ada and Blanchard, with a win over Noble.

Meanwhile, the Plainsmen will be looking to build on their 64-48 win over Yukon Saturday in the seventh-place game of the Bruce Gray Invitational. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Plainsmen (5-11), who, prior to Saturday’s victory, had not won since defeating Guthrie 57-51 on Jan. 4.

The Plainsmen juggled their rotation and starting lineup for Saturday’s contest against Yukon as 11 players scored, led by Deon Parker and Darnae Banks who each had a team-high 10 points.

Enid, 1-2 at home this season, will be looking to avenge its loss to Woodward earlier in the season.

The Boomers (8-9) won the consolation championship at the Newcastle Tournament this past weekend, falling to Ada in the opening round before rebounding with wins over Washington and host Newcastle.

Both games tonight will be broadcast by KGWA (960 AM).

Following tonight’s contests, Enid will next host Ponca City at the Mabee Center on Thursday.

Sooners zero in on Big 12
Oklahoma has made a complete turnaround in the last two days. The squad that looked dominant early in the season has re-emerged at the Big 12 tournament. The Sooners (38-19) rolled to their second straight tournament victory, thumping Texas Tech (25-30), 8-0, Friday, and improving to 2-0 in the event.
After three weeks of struggling, the team OU thought it would be surfaced. The mix of premier pitching and timely hitting was overwhelming to Baylor on Thursday and Texas Tech on Friday.
More importantly, the victories set up the Sooners’ meeting with Kansas State, which topped Baylor 13-9 Friday, at 12:30 p.m. today. The winner advances to Sunday’s championship game.

Claborn pleased with WHS progress
The Deer Creek-Lamont team camp has given Waukomis football coach Jon Claborn an idea of how much his team has progressed over the past year.
A newly hired Claborn a year ago took his team to the DCLA camp with three days of spring football behind them.
“We’re leaps and bounds ahead of where we were last year,’’ Claborn said. “We have looked really good ... we’re a year older, stronger, and hopefully, a year smarter.’’
The DCLA camp has offered the Chiefs good competition with teams such as defending Class B state runner-up Pond Creek-Hunter, Coyle and the host Eagles among the participants.
