Jets record 6th straight win

ENID — Garrett Kelly threw a complete game and Blake Callaway hit a two-run homer as NOC Enid beat Kirkwood (Iowa), 7-2 for its sixth- straight win in junior college baseball action Sunday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader today at David Allen. The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader Sunday but wereswitched to a single game because of rain in the morning. The Jets are 14-6 overall. Kirkwood dropped to 2-5.

The Jets, with a sweep today, would have 400 wins as a program, all under coach Raydon Leaton. Justin Sheets (3-1) and Jonathan Johnson (2-1) are scheduled to pitch for NOC Enid

“That’s a big deal,’’ said NOC Enid assistant coach Scott Mansfield about the inpending milestone. “We’re excited to have that opportunity for coach Leaton.’’

Kelly, 3-1, allowed seven hits while striking out three and walking one. Seventy-one of his 106 pitches were for strikes and had first-pitch strikes on 24 of the 36 batters he faced.

“Garrett pitched well,’’ Mansfield said. “His breaking stuff was working real well and he worked the (strike) zone well with his fastball. He’s a pitcher and not a thrower.’’

He was backed up by a eight-hit attack, including a 2-for-4 performance by J.R. Head, who scored twice and stole two bases.

“We were facing a real good pitcher today,’’ Mansfield said. “You have to find a way to beat him. If you can find a new approach like we did, you have a chance to win. When you’re winning, everyone is having a good time. We’re playing like we have something to prove because we do.’’

Callaway’s home run was the big blow of a three-run third inning, which gave Kelly all the help he would need. Tyler Wilkins led off with single and scored after a Head double and a sacrifice fly by Christian Faulkner. Callaway followed Faulkner with a shot over the left field fence.

Brandon Ruiz made it 4-1 in the fourth when he walked, advanced to third after an error and a passed ball, and scored on Logan Glasgow’s sacrifice fly.

The Jets added two more runs in the seventh. Head walked, stole second and third and scored on Logan Bradley’s single to left. Callaway, who walked scored on a passed ball for the final run.

Kirkwood scored single runs in the second and eighth.

Both teams committed an error.
