INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — —
Northern Oklahoma College Enid extended its winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep on the road against Independence (Kan.) Community College. The Jets won the first game 13-8 and then rode a strong effort by starting pitcher Zach Postoak to post a 7-2 win in the nightcap.
J.R. Head went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, leading a 13-hit attack for the Jets in the opener.
NOC Enid jumped out on top early, grabbing a 4-0 lead in the first inning after Head and Chris Faulkner walked to start the game. Head came home on a Brandon Ruiz single, followed by an RBI single from Tanner Cruts that scored Faulkner. David Bradley’s single to left scored Ruiz and Cruts made it 4-0 when he scored on an error.
Independence scored twice in its half of the opening inning, but NOC Enid added two runs in both the second and third inning.
The Jets appeared to have blown the game open with a four-run sixth inning that put NOC Enid up 13-4 as Faulkner’s lead-off double ignited the Jets’ offense in the sixth inning.
Faulkner went 2-for-4 in the game. Bradley and Tyler Wilkins also had two hits apiece for the Jets.
Independence rallied for four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to close to within 13-8, but the Pirates were shut down in the seventh inning by relief pitcher Travis Lance.
Jets’ starter Tyler Dean (2-1) went 52⁄3 innings for the victory.
Both teams struggled in the field, committing a combined 14 errors, nine by the Pirates.
Postoak overwhelmed Pirates hitters in the nightcap, keeping Indpendence off the scoreboard until the sixth inning when they plated two runs, both unearned. Postoak (2-1) surrendered only four hits and struck out three, including the game’s final hitter, in going the distance.
The Jets gave Postoak all the run support he needed with a five-run first inning.
As he did in the first game, Head walked to start the game and then came home on Faulkner’s double to center. After Ruiz flied out, Cruts reached base on an error by the Pirates shortstop, scoring Faulkner. The hit parade continued as the Jets added three more runs in the inning to go up 5-0.
NOC Enid added another run in the fifth on a Walker sacrifice fly that scored Ruiz who had reached base with a double to open the inning.
Faulkner, who went 2-for-4 in the nightcap, continued his torrid hitting with a lead-off triple in the seventh and scored when Harper singled to left to put the Jets up 7-2.
NOC Enid (12-6) returns home for a three-game series against Kirkwood (Iowa) Community College with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday and a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. Monday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
