Pacers win 4th straight, boys fall

WOODWARD, Okla. — Courtney Chelf scored 24 points as Enid’s girls raised their record to 6-1 with a 60-53 win over Woodward Tuesday night.

In the boys game, Taylor Iliff scored 16 points and Kaleb Roach and Ty Richey added 15 as the Boomers handed the Enid boys their third straight loss, 66-46.

The Pacers had a 55-40 lead after a basket by Abby Lee with 5:20 remaining, only to see the Lady Boomers cut the margin to 57-51 with 1:02 remaining.

Haven Bay missed the front-end of a one-and-one, but Grace Enmeier was fouled getting the offensive rebound. She hit both free throws to give EHS a 59-51 lead on its way to its fourth straight win.

“We have to play smarter basketball when we get a lead,’’ said Pacers head coach Robb Mills. “Woodward played well, but we feel like we didn’t play as well as we should. We have to go back to work. We were in foul trouble and that made it tougher to play defense.’’

Chelf fouled out with a little less than two minutes remaining. The Pacers were only five-of-10 from the foul line in the fourth period.

Chelf had 14 points in the second half. Enmeier had 12 points and Bay added 10.

“Courtney really carried us in the second half,’’ Mills said. “Grace Enmeier played really well.’’

The Lady Boomers shocked the Pacers by racing out to an early 10-3 lead. Enid would come back to lead 15-12 by the end of the first quarter.

Woodward’s last lead was 22-21 late in the first half. Enid scored the last six points of the second quarter to lead 27-22 at intermission.

“It was nice to win,’’ Mills said, “but we didn’t come out with the intensity that we should have. We overcame that in the second quarter.’’

Mercedes Bell led Woodward with 15 points, including 13 in the first half. Haylee Bates had 14 points, 11 of which came after halftime.

The Pacers will be off until Jan. 4 when they face Guthrie.

WOODWARD 66, ENID 46 (B)

The Boomers led only 25-21 at halftime, but controlled the second half. Woodward used a 12-2 run in the third period to take a 46-32 lead and never looked back.

Aaron Austin was the lone Plainsman in double figures with 10 points. Correll Baker had given EHS its last lead, 21-19 with two free throws with 2:18 left in the half. Woodward scored the last six points of the half to go up by four at halftime.

The Plainsmen (2-5) are off until Dec. 27 when they play at the Mid-Del Holiday Tournament.

Jackson signs with Mid-America Christian
Jemarcus Jackson signed a letter of intent to play basketball on a scholarship at NAIA Division I Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City on Monday, ending a long wait for the Enid High senior, and a longer one for his nerves.
Jackson already was sweating thanks to a weighty training session just before his signing ceremony at the Enid High School food court, but that wasn’t the only reason he was “sweating like a dog” as he filled out the paperwork.

Aggies give D-II series a state flavor
A tip of the hat to Murray State College for winning the Plains District tournament this weekend to assure there will be an Oklahoma team in the upcoming NJCAA Division II World Series at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
The Aggies, who were 5-0 against Northern Oklahoma College Enid this season, beat MCC-Longview 14-7 in the district championship game to take a 41-21 record into the tournament.
They are a team that should be easy for Enid fans to adopt as their own.
