Blackwell pins Plainsmen

ENID, Okla. — There were three positives in Enid’s 54-12 loss to defending Class 3A state champion Blackwell in a wrestling dual at Waller Middle School Tuesday.

Jake Scott (220) and Billy Grothe (126) collected falls, while Keegan Clayton (152) was Enid’s other winner with a 5-4 decision.

Scott’s fall came in 20 seconds.

“Jake is on the right path,’’ said Enid coach Jory Dick. “He’s training hard and wrestling hard. Grothe is on a roll. Keegan is wrestling well enough to win. But he has another gear. He has to find it.’’

The Maroons, though, had six falls and a forfeit. Freshman 113-pounder Troy Gray (6-4), 160-pounder Hunter Nixon (3-2) and 195-pounder Zach Overbeck (7-4) all had close losses.

“Our mental toughness isn’t where it needs to be,’’ Dick said. “We can’t afford to give up that many falls. You put yourself in a bad hole when that happens. We know how to wrestle. We have to stay tough and learn how to win. The guys are working as hard as any other team, but they’ve got to have some killer instinct and not give up.’’

The Plainsmen lost to Blackwell 69-6 last season.

Enid will visit Ponca City Thursday in its final dual before the holidays.

“The good news is that we will have 12 days over Christmas to clean things up,’’ Dick said. “We are on the right track. I’m not worried right now. We don’t qualify for state until February.’’
