Enid swimmers enter busy five-day stretch

Plainsmen, Pacers scheduled to compete thrice through Monday

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s swimmers might feel like marathon runners the next few days.

The Pacers and Plainsmen, who haven’t had a meet since Dec. 3, will go to Ponca City at 6 tonight, host Putnam City West and Putnam City North at 5 p.m. Friday at the Denny Price Family YMCA and will face the three Edmond high schools Monday at Oklahoma City Community College.

“I probably shouldn’t have scheduled so many meets this close, but we needed meets and this was the only time they (Putnam City schools) could come here and the only time we could go there (OCCC).’’

Shipley said the back-to-back meets today and Friday should be an indicator of how well EHS could do at the state meet, which is held over two days.

“It’s not the killer people may think it is,’’ Shipley said.

Enid’s primary goals are to add to its state cuts. Shipley especially wants to qualify the boys 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Michael Johnson is close in the 50 free and Ashley Valdez is closing in on her state cut in the 100 free.

“A lot of kids are close,’’ Shipley said. “Some kids who have already qualified are going to swim the same event to get a better time.’’

Ponca City and the two Putnam City teams are similar to Enid in numbers, Shipley said. Junior standout Sara Nazari will miss the meet because of a sore back.
