ENID — When informed earlier this week, Seth Floyd was unaware of his standing among Enid High School’s all-time hitters.

“Really? That’s pretty cool,’’ said Floyd, who turned in two of the top batting averages for the Plainsmen in recent history. “I didn’t know that.’’

Floyd’s .441 batting average this spring ranks third behind Drake Smith’s .475 batting mark in 1999 and Jim Hepburn’s .464 average in 1983.

Floyd’s .409 performance as a junior ranks 10th in recent history.

“I was just seeing the ball real well all spring,’’ said Floyd, who is playing with the Enid Majors this summer before embarking on his college career.

Floyd, 18, signed with Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College on Monday, deciding against offers from Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa and Western Oklahoma State.

“I just felt that Hutch was a better place for me,’’ said Floyd. “They like to play small ball, move runners over, hit and run, and that’s more my style.’’

Hutchinson, an NJCAA Division I member of the Jayhawk Conference, went 39-24 this season and placed third in the World Series.

“I want to go up there and have a good career and then get a chance to play at a big (NCAA Division) school after that,’’ said Floyd.
