Seniors set pace in win

ENID — Enid’s 1960 state championship basketball team was honored at halftime of a game against Bartlesville at Mabee Center Friday but the night belonged to the Plainsmen of the present.

Seniors Chris Fitzpatrick (23 points) and Clint Gamble (18), playing the last home game of their careers, combined for 41 points as Enid used a fourth-quarter rally to beat the Bruins 57-48.

The news wasn’t as good for the Pacers, who fell to 3-17 Lady Bruins 39-38 despite an 18-point effort from Courtney Chelf.

Fitzpatrick left to a standing ovation after he hit two free throws with 10.6 seconds  left. Gamble and fellow seniors Gibson Rose and Zach Siewert left the court with ovations of their own before the free throws.

“It’s always good going out like that,’’ said Fitzpatrick, who led the Plainsmen to an undefeated home season as well as a 15-8 overall record and a Centennial Conference championship (7-1).

“To end it with two big free throws like that, it’s big. I’m glad to end it that way.’’

The Plainsmen seniors would make their last quarter at home a memorable one.

Fitzpatrick, Gamble and Rose opened the quarter with a 12-0 run to turn a 39-37 deficit into a 49-47 lead. Siewert closed his home career with a layup with 1:40 left to make it 53-43.

“We stepped it up and we came out pretty big,’’ Fitzpatrick said. “Coach said we needed to get some stops and we did. Our defense picked it up in the second half and we made some big shots.’’

Gamble matched his career high with 18 points but regretted missing a free throw in the fourth period.

“It’s still a good way to go out,’’ he said. “It was emotional being the last home game but we still have another game we have to take care of next week (first-round regional game against Bixby at Broken Arrow Friday).’’

Bartlesville was 15-of-27 from the field in the first three quarters but only 2-of-11 in the fourth quarter.

“I don’t know why but we’re always a second-half team,’’ Gamble said. “We always come out and play hard in the second half. Coach (T.J.) Scholz made some adjustments that worked out well.’’

Blake Hicks had 17 points for Bartlesville but only five points in the second half.

A follow shot by Gamble gave Enid a 37-31 lead with 4:15 left in the third period but Bartlesville scored eight unanswered points to take a 39-37 lead after three quarters.

Enid was 24-of-43 for the game, including 7-of-9 in the final period.

The Pacers missed two scoring opportunities in the last five seconds in dropping their second straight home game. EHS finished the regular season at 12-11 overall and 3-5 in conference.

Wilson missed a free throw with 4.5 seconds left but Chelf’s shot at the buzzer was just off.

The Pacers were only 16-of-48 from the field, including 3-of-13 in the fourth quarter. Enid did not score after Rani Melvin canned a 3-pointer to give the Pacers a 37-33 lead with 3:40 remaining.

The Pacers, as they did Monday against Sand Springs, blew a six-point lead in the third period.

“We didn’t capitalize on our opportunities,’’ said Enid coach Layne Jones. “We turned it over and our shots weren’t falling. We took good shots and we did what we wanted but we weren’t making our shots.’’

Haley Rasp joined Chelf in double figures with 12 points but only two other Pacers scored — Jayci Wehrenberg (four points) and Melvin (three points).

Wilson had a strange shooting night. She hit her first four shots and her last three. In between, she was 1-of-13.

“You have to give them credit,’’ Jones said. “She’s a good player. Our girls didn’t cut her off like we told them to. The girls have to make plays.’’

Senior Ty Washington, playing on a bad knee, played the first 10 seconds before coming out. Jones said he started her to honor her on Senior Night.

EHS will face Owasso Thursday night at the regional at Shawnee.
