Needing a spark to get going as the baseball season starts heading down the stretch, the Enid Plainsmen (10-15) got a big one Monday in the form of a 10-2 run-rule victory over the Woodward Boomers at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
Coming into Monday’s game, the Boomers were hot, having won 12 of their last 15 games after a 4-7 start. The Plainsmen, on the other hand, were reeling going 3-8 in their last 11 games.
Enid coach James Peoples gave sophomore hurler Jerry Kearney the ball Monday and he put the clamps on Woodward in a three-hit, complete game victory.
The Plainsmen finally also found a way to get the clutch hits and drive runners in and it made the difference in the win.
The Plainsmen led 1-0 after two innings when senior designated hitter Brock Enmeier, who went three-for-three on the night, hit the first pitch he saw from Woodward pitcher Bo Kent and drove it out of the yard down the leftfield line for a solo blast and the lead.
Enid picked up three more runs in the third on a double by junior Haden Houska followed by senior Joe Black getting hit by a pitch. Senior Dillon Walker had a sacrifice fly to move the runners up and junior Lawson King added a RBI sacrifice fly. Singles by senior Blake Ferguson, Enmeier and senior Christian Rodriguez plated two more runs for the 4-0 Enid lead.
In the top of the fourth, Kearney ran into a little bit of trouble and allowed two runs on two hits and a costly Plainsmen error to put Woodward back in the game at 4-2.
In the bottom of the inning, Enid sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs to put the game in run-rule territory.
In the decisive inning, the Plainsmen chased Kent, picking up seven hits including four hits in a row. Walker, King and Ferguson all picked up RBI’s on singles.
In the fifth, Kearney closed the book on Woodward, setting the Boomers down in order for the win.
“That was a real nice win,” Peoples said. “Our guys came out and put some multiple hits together and swung the bats real well today.
“It took some pressure off of Kearney and took some pressure off of the defense.”
The biggest positive for Enid on Monday was the return of clutch hitting with runners on base, most recently an Achilles heel for the Plainsmen.
“They came through today,” Peoples said. “It was just what the doctor ordered. Hopefully, we can get on a roll during the last stretch run of the season and start swinging the bats like we did today.
“We have to get on a roll down the stretch.”
The Plainsmen will be back on the diamond Thursday when 7th-ranked Yukon comes calling at 5:30 p.m.
“We have to come out and play a clean game against them,” Peoples said.
The homestand continues Friday when top-ranked Broken Arrow visits David Allen Memorial Ballpark at 5:30 p.m.
