ENID —
Enid swept to victory over Lawton Saturday at the Mabee Center, with the Pacers coming away with a 37-17 victory and the Plainsmen defeating the Wolverines in dramatic fashion, 55-52.
The Pacers (15-7) were able secure their third straight win by overcoming an inconsistent offense that produced only 12 points in the first half against the Lady Wolverines (7-14).
The Pacers also struggled from the free throw line, going 7-of-18, while both teams combined for 43 turnovers.
Abby Lee led Enid with 14 points and Courtney Chelf had 12.
Lawton didn’t have a player score over seven points due in large part to the continued strong defense being played by the Pacers. Enid’s girls will conclude the regular season at Ponca City Thursday before opening regional play against Bartlesville Feb. 23 at Jenks.
The 17 points was the fewest EHS has allowed in a game this season.
“We picked up our 15th win and we are happy about that,” said Pacers head coach Robb Mills. “It wasn’t our best effort, but we got the job done.
“The good thing is, we continue to play good defense. Any time you do that, it’s going to keep you in games. Defense is one of the things we fixed. We need to work on getting up for every game now and playing at a high level.”
ENID 55, LAWTON 52 (B)
After losing a heartbreaker to Lawton Eisenhower Friday night, the Plainsmen (9-12) bounced back to upend the Wolverines.
Senior Marvin Elmore had 13 points in the game. The scrappy senior got some redemption Saturday after missing the potential game-tying 3-point shot the night before.
With 7.5 seconds left to play, Elmore knocked down a 15-footer from the left wing for the winning shot in the ball game.
“It felt good,” Elmore said. “Mitchell (Foote) gave me a good pass and I pulled up and the shot went in. I was upset last night, but my teammates gave me another chance to hit a big shot.”
Ahead 32-26 at intermission, the third quarter proved troublesome for Enid. Lawton used a 15-8 run to go up 41-40 going into the final period.
With 3:05 left to play, Lawton (16-4) grabbed a 49-46 advantage. Two Wolverine free throws pushed the lead to 51-48 at the 1:03 mark. With 27.3 seconds remaining, Elmore converted one of two free throws, trimming the lead to 52-51. Seventeen seconds later, Elmore connected on what would turn out to be the winning shot to put Enid up 53-52.
Foote, who led all scorers with 20 points, dropped in two from the charity stripe with 2.8 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
“I don’t know if we lost focus in the third quarter or what after getting up by 10 (36-26), but we battled back,” said Plainsmen head coach Ryan Wilkinson. “It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it.”
The Plainsmen close the regular season Thursday at Ponca City before opening regionals Feb. 24 against Tulsa Edison on the Eagles’ home court.
“Ponca can play very well at times,” Wilkinson said. “We have to be prepared for them. We want to close the season on a positive note and carry it into the playoffs.”
