HENNESSEY— The 9th-ranked Hennessey Eagles (16-4) flexed their muscle in a decisive 56-38 win over Garber (13-10) Tuesday night, making it a clean sweep for the homestanding Hennessey teams and snapping Garber’s six-game win streak.
The Eagles’ win followed the Lady Eagles’(13-7) victory earlier in the night over the Lady Wolverines (13-10), 57-54.
Orlando Pina led the Eagles with 12 points while Jordan Avants paced Garber with 14 points.
There was never any real question in the game as the Eagles got stronger as the night went on. After leading 28-23 at halftime, the Eagles made short work of Garber in the third quarter, frustrating the Garber offense en route to a dominating 18-7 quarter and a comfortable 46-30 cushion after three periods.
“The kids played good,” said Eagles coach Brady Page. “We`are starting to peak at the right time before the playoffs.”
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles defense stifled the Wolverines and didn’t allow a bucket until the 4;15 mark, pushing out to a 51-32 advantage before claiming the 56-38 win.
“We are happy to be playing well right now,” Page said. “We changed up our defnese and we are getting better at it.”
Hennessey 57, Garber 54 (G)
The Lady Eagles’ Jordan Collier came out hot en route to a 21-point performance in Hennessey’s win while Sydney Postier led Garber with 24 points in her final regular season game in a Lady Wolverines uniform.
“We tried to give it away there at the end, but we’ll take it,” said Lady Eagles head coach Mark Harmon.
“We shot he ball well in the first half . Jordan Collier kept us in the game offensively.”
In the opening frame, the Hennessey Lady Eagles ran out to a 15-2 cushion with three minutes left in the quarter. Garber found the bucket, and a 6-5 surge left Hennessey out front 20-8.
The Lady Wolverines stayed the course in the second frame, and playing with more energy defensively, held the Lady Eagles to one bucket to cut the deficit to 22-21 at the 3:26 mark before halftime. An 8-4 Hennessey spurt pushed Hennessey to a 30-25 at intermission.
Garber came out of the locker room on a mission, and a Postier layup with 2:47 showing gave the Lady Wolverines their first lead at 39-37. Hennessey closed the third quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 41-39 lead.
The Lady Eagles stayed hot and reeled off a 10-6 push to take a 51-45 margin. In the final three minutes, Garber fought back with a 9-6 run, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Hennessey defense prevailed for the victory.
“We held them when we had to,” Harmon said. “We made our free throws and it shouldn’t been as close as it was, but we’ll take it.”
