Jets extend streak

ENID —

Northern Oklahoma College Enid (19-6) won its  11th game in a row Saturday, knocking off Des Moines (Iowa) Area Community College 11-8 at windswept David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

The Jets fell behind 8-5 in the fifth inning, but roared back with five runs in the bottom of the eighth to claim the hard-fought win.

The Jets plated three runs on four hits in the fourth to move out to a 5-1 advantage. Blake Callawat and Tanner Cruts tripled home runs, and Tyler Wilkins had an RBI single.

Callaway added a double and a RBI for the day, while Wilkins picked up his second RBI and went 3-for-3 on the afternoon.

“We knew they would be a good ballclub and we knew we would have to come out swinging,” Wilkins said. “I felt good at the plate. I saw them play Tonkawa last night and I knew what was coming.

“I had a couple of RBI and helped my team the best way I could.”

DMACC grabbed the 8-5 lead in the fifth, scoring seven runs on five hits, including a mammoth grand slam to leftfield by Sean Moore, his second homer of the day.

“It was a well-played game,” NOC Enid coach Raydon Leaton said. “It was competitive like we thought it would be, and we just tried to find a way to win.”

And the Jets did just that. Trailing 8-6 moving into the bottom of the eighth, Dusty Harper led off with a walk. Logan Bradley greeted new reliever Brandon Peterson with an RBI double to left field.

From there, the plate disappeared on the 6-foot-1 Peterson.

Peterson walked three hitters on 12 pitches before throwing his first strike. Another walk and a hit batsman pushed NOC Enid out to a 11-8 edge, it did not relinquish in the win.

“We had one bad inning in the fifth and they had one in the eight,” Leaton explained. “Travis (Lance) came in and did a good job of closing that out.

“We’ll have to regroup and get ready for tomorrow.”DMACC (10-9) was an entrant into the 2011 NJCAA College World Series at David Allen last May and coach Dan Fitzgerald was confident his team would be there at the end again in 2012.

“We have played a real tough schedule,” he said. “We have a lot of returning players from last year so I’m confident of their ability to get us back to the Series.”The Jets and DMACC will conclude their series with  a 1 p.m. doubleheader today at David Allen.

“We made some mistakes on the mound and hung some sliders,” Leaton acknowledged. “A good team like that will make you pay for it.

“We’ve been playing well, but every day is different. We’ll worry about game one and then game two when it gets here.”
