NORMAN — —
Enid’s Daniel Martinez beat Heritage Hall’s Luke Howard for the first time, 6-4, 7-5, to win the No. 1 singles title at the Norman North boys tennis tournament Thursday.
The Plainsmen finished fifth as a team with 44 points. Connor Angleton was sixth at No. 2 singles, while both doubles teams, Jason Chri-stopherson and Zach Gwin, No. 1 and Peter Hwang and Blake Young, No. 2, were seventh.
Enid won all of its first-round matches for the first time this season.
Martinez lost only three games in reaching the finals. He raised his record to 11-4 with the championship. The win over Howard could be significant for the future.
“That’s a good thing to go on his resume,’’ said Enid coach Darrell Herndon. “Luke Howard will beat a lot of people we may have to reference to (for indirect wins) in future seeding meetings.’’
Angleton had a tough three-set loss to Ryan Peters of Broken Arrow, 7-6, 3-6, 10-6 in the second round. He lost to Norman’s Caleb Anthony, 6-0, 6-4 for fifth and is now 7-8 overall.
Christopherson and Gwin beat a Sand Springs team for seventh place to go 2-2 on the day to raise their record to 8-7 on the season.
Hwang and Young won in the first round for the first time this season. They lost the next two matches but won their seventh-place match, 0-6, 6-0, 13-11. They now are 5-9 overall.
“We did OK,’’ Herndon said. “We were able to get some exposure to some teams that we haven’t seen this year, and that was good.’’
Enid will be off until the Duncan-OKC Tournament March 28.

Glencoe duo makes strong introduction
The last time Nate Melton and Claytin Beaver played together, they left the field losers of a season-ending 12-5 Class A state quarterfinal.
On Friday, each of them in Enid Majors blue instead of Glencoe red, and things went closer to plan.
Melton was the Majors’ opening-day starter, introducing himself to Enid with six strikeouts in three innings, topping 90 mph with a fastball that rarely ended anywhere but Beaver’s mitt in a 7-1 Majors win. -
