Garber teammates ECU bound

GARBER, Okla. — Garber offensive lineman Jeremy Newton will continue to block for quarterback Jordan Avants after both signed letters of intent with East Central Wednesday.

“That makes it all the better,’’ said the 6-foot-8, 240-pound Newton, who will move from guard to tackle.

“It’s nice to have someone I’ll know,’’ Avants said.

Avants, who rushed for 2,009 yards and 38 touchdowns and threw for 1,885 yards and 20 scores, chose the Tigers over Southwestern Oklahoma State and University of Central Oklahoma.

“They made me feel a part of the family,’’ Avants said. “The campus atmosphere is really nice. They have put a lot of stuff in their facilities.’’

“Jordan is a diamond in the rough,” said ECU head coach Tim McCarty at the school’s Wednesday press conference announcing the Tigers’ 2013 recruiting class. “He has the ability to do multiple things, is extremely competitive, and it shows.”

Newton chose ECU over Fort Hays (Kan.) State.

“It feels pretty good,’’ he said.

The Tigers run a spread offense which was similar to the Wolverines.

Avants said he will be a quarterback, but doesn’t know if he will be redshirted.

“I want to come into the program and get the offense down,’’ he said. “ I don’t want to struggle with it the first semester. I want to get right in the middle of things and compete.’’

Newton said he wants to be up to 270 or 280 when he reports.

“My long term goals are to get an education and see if I can’t get on and start right away,’’ Newton said. “It will be an adjustment from 8-man, but we all put on the same pads and the same helmet. It will be more of a challenge, but I’m looking forward to it.’’

Avants said having three more players on the field is “a big transition, but I think I can do the job. I know the spread and that will help.’’
