Wimbledon trip is surprise for EHS' Dick

ENID, Okla. — When Gabrielle Dick left for John Newcombe’s Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels, Texas, last week, little did she know it would be her ticket to this summer’s Wimbledon championships.

Dick was one of eight girls selected from a group of 75 to represent Newk’s Tennis Ranch on the John Newcombe tennis tour in Europe.

The group will spend three weeks in England and Scotland playing against academy students there. They will spend three days watching Wimbledon.

“It feels good,’’ said Dick, who teamed with sister Alex to finish second at No. 1 doubles in the Class 6A state tournament last spring for Enid. “I was surprised. I didn’t expect it.’’

The Newcombe staff selected the eight girls based on “sportsmanship stuff,’’ Dick said.

“It was based on your personality as a person and not how good you are,’’ Dick said. “It’s going to be a great opportunity.’’

Dick had been selected to attend the Ranch’s winter session after making the “Top Gun’’ group during a week’s stay last summer.

“It was pretty exciting,’’ Dick said. “It was fun and it was good for my game to be playing different people.’’

In Europe, she will have the opportunity to play on clay courts and possibly grass courts.

“It’s going to be a totally different environment,’’ Dick said. “The cultural opportunities are going to be good.’’

Dick got to play on some clay courts at Newk’s, and she said she enjoyed the experience.

It will be here first time in Europe.

“I’ve always wanted to watch matches at Wimbledon,’’ Dick said.

She said she is looking forward to seeing Maria Sharapova, her favorite player.
