Jackets sting Longhorns

ENID, Okla. — The Chisholm High School boys basketball team took a 23-20 lead into halftime Friday against visiting Fairview, but struggled on both ends in the final two frames to lose the rivalry tilt, 58-38.

The Longhorns survived 12 first-half turnovers as Fairview shot 27 percent in the first two quarters, but runs of 6-0 and 10-0 in the third put Chisholm in a 38-28 deficit to start the fourth that it never closed.

“The second half just didn’t go the way we planned,” said Chisholm’s Reid Weber, who scored a team-high seven points in the first half, but was held scoreless after intermission. “We came out really flat in the third quarter and just couldn’t get back on top. Not much other than that, just lackadaisical, as coach says.”

Austin Grieshober scored all 10 of the Longhorns’ points in the final quarter, nine of them on three made three-pointers, but Fairview countered with 20, including eight at the free throw line, to cap a 38-15 advantage in the decisive half.

“This team believes that they can win,” said Chisholm coach Cody Spurlock. “We come out in the second half and we’re down 10, 15 points really quick. I think we were a little shellshocked, and we’ve got to do a better job playing with intensity in the third quarter.”

The fourth quarter was substantially more intense.

Caleb Lang was whistled for an intentional foul while wrapping up Fairview’s Bryce Kippenberger, who led all scorers with 22, on a layup, and a late-game shove resulted in a technical foul against the Yellowjackets and two players being separated.

“There’s a rivalry between Fairview and Chisholm, everybody knows that,” Weber said. “That’s just how it’s going to be, basketball season, football season, whatever sport we’re playing … I saw two guys playing basketball and trying to win. That’s just what happened.”

Grieshober finished with a team-high 13, and Danner Keirnan added 10 for Chisholm (3-6), which hosts Hennessey on Monday.

“We’re still trying to figure out how to put four quarters together,” Spurlock said. “That takes time and understanding that you can’t win a ballgame playing two good quarters, you’ve got to put all four together.”

Lady Yellowjackets 54, Lady Longhorns 21

Chisholm didn’t hit a basket from the field until almost halftime, and Fairview never let up, leading wire-to-wire to down the Lady Longhorns 54-21 Friday in Chisholm.

Fairview opened the game with full-court pressure that rarely loosened, and the Lady Longhorns struggled at times to advance the ball over the timeline, finishing with more turnovers (10) than shot attempts (2) in the opening quarter, including five giveaways before taking their first shot more than halfway through the first quarter.

Chisholm finished the first quarter scoreless and didn’t tally its first point until Megan Galusha hit one of two free throws at the 6:37 mark in the second quarter, the team’s first basket coming almost five minutes later when Faith Mirelez hit a three with 1:48 left in the half.

“It didn’t look like (we were ready for the pressure), did it?” a relatively incredulous coach Terry Middleton said. “We worked on it, we talked about it … We just were not doing what we were supposed to do.”

Chisholm trailed 23-4 by halftime and never could come closer.

“I was kind of disappointed,” Middleton said. “I thought we had a little more fight than we showed tonight. I just wanted to see them play hard and do the little things we worked on.”

Middleton said the break might have provided some rust but refused to put the loss on the 17-day layover.

“The break hurts us a little bit, but we can make all the excuses we want,” he said. “They just came in and kicked our butts.”

Galusha scored a team-high eight, and Mirelez added seven for the Lady Longhorns (5-4), who host Hennessey on Monday.

Lunt transferring to Illinois
Former Oklahoma State starting quarterback Wes Lunt is transferring to Illinois, returning to his home state after giving the Illini little consideration out of high school.
Lunt is from Rochester, Ill., and started five games last season as a freshman for the Cowboys, but was sidelined by an injury. He was the first true freshman to open the season as the starting quarterback at Oklahoma State since at least 1950.
The highly regarded Lunt will have to sit out this fall under NCAA transfer rules, but when he’s available in 2014 could be an instant upgrade for a struggling Illinois program and coach Tim Beckman, who is headed into his second season in Champaign. Beckman is a former OSU assistant coach.
