ENID —
The host Enid Plainsmen (5-7) had high hopes coming into the Gladys Winters Invitational, but things have turned south for the home team the last three days.
After two opening losses, the Plainsmen had a chance to advance Friday to play for the fifth-place trophy and a measure of redemption of sorts for the tournament against familiar foe Midwest City.
However, it was not meant to be Friday night at David Allen Memorial Ballpark as Midwest City, behind the strong pitching of junior Jagger Harjo, topped the Plainsmen 6-2 and earned the right to play Yukon at 2 p.m. today for fifth place.
By virtue of their third loss in three days, Enid will play Southmoore today at 11:30 a.m. for seventh place.
The Plainsmen now have dropped five of their last six games.
“We just have to go out and find a way to win a game and get some confidence going right now,” Enid skipper James Peoples said. “We didn’t pitch well tonight out of the bullpen. The guys are young and they are going to grow up. They will be there in the end when we need them.”
The Bombers raced out front 2-0 in the opening frame when Greg Bruno was hit by a pitch, Joel Davis singled and sophomore Zac Brannon tripled to right-center to drive in both runners.
In the top of the fourth, Enid tied the game at 2-2 on a series of errors from Midwest City. With two out, senior Blake Ferguson walked. On a 1-0 pitch, Colter LeGrant chopped a bouncer towards second base and shortstop Joel Davis threw to first but first baseman Bruno was more concerned about Ferguson dancing toward third and initiated a run-down.
By the time it was over, Bruno threw wildly to home scoring Ferguson and LeGrant utilized his speed to dash home before the Bombers could recover the baseball to knot the game at 2-2.
In the sixth inning, Midwest City scored four runs against three Enid pitchers to ice the win. Enid used starter Trevor Miller, Garrett Sunday and Jake Walker in the inning, giving up three walks and two costly wild pitches.
“Right now, we’re not making the quality pitches we need to make,” Peoples said. “We didn’t offense like we should have. We hit the ball right at them and that is part of it. We have to figure it out and put hits together.
“We have to string hits together and get the big hits to get the guys in.”
For Midwest City, the real story of the night was Harjo. The junior hurler allowed only three hits and struck out six Plainsmen.
“He has really solidified himself as our ace,” Bombers coach Craig Troxell said. “He has been consistent all year and he’s not going to overpower you with his velocity. He has three pitches he can throw for strikes.
“He is a competitor. He’s just a good pitcher. Anytime you can come in here and beat Enid is a good win.
“It is always a barn-burner.”
