Enid's Phillips shuts out Woodward

WOODWARD —  —  Mike Phillips threw a six-hit shutout — the first by an Enid pitcher this season — in leading Enid to a 5-0 victory over Woodward Monday.

The game had been moved from David Allen Memorial Ballpark to Woodward Monday morning because of field conditions.

Phillips struck out seven and walked three in raising his record to 4-4. The Plainsmen are now 13-10 while the Boomers dropped to 12-9.

Phillips was at his best under pressure as the Boomers stranded nine runners. Phillips had only one 1-2-3 inning, that coming in the seventh.

“Mike did a good job,’’ said Enid coach James Peoples. “He came through under pressure.’’

Woodward lefthander Shawn Hunter allowed only seven hits in taking the loss. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

“He had good movement on his fastball,’’ Peoples said. “We swung the bats pretty well but he (Hunter) did a good job.’’

Enid made the most of its opportunities leaving only two runners on base.

Enid broke a 0-0 tie with three runs in the second. Brock Enmeier and Joe Phillips opened the inning with bloop singles. Pinch-runners Tanner Miller and Hayden Houska both scored when Hunter overthrew third trying to get Miller on a sacrifice attempt by Brady Baugh.

Baugh scored after a sacrifice by Joe Black and a sacrifice fly by Seth Floyd.

Enid added two more runs in the sixth. Floyd led off with a double, went to third on a infield single by Erick Ramirez and scored off a double steal. Miguel Bretado singled in pinch-runner McLain Clemens.

The Plainsmen were designated as the home team after the game was moved. EHS had games rained out Friday and Saturday at the Stillwater Tournament.

“It was tough to move the game,’’ Peoples said. “Everybody wants home games but but we needed to play. It worked out pretty well for us.’’

The Plainsmen will be back in action Thursday at Midwest City. Enid will host Moore Friday and Sand Springs for a doubleheader Saturday.
