ENID —
The Enid Plainsmen dropped their second straight game of the Gladys Winters Memorial Tournament Thurs-day at David Allen Memorial Ballpark, falling to Putnam City North 7-5.
In a game that was delayed by nearly 90 minutes due to the length of the previous game and due to ceremonies honoring the Enid Pacers’ girls basketball team, the Plainsmen fell behind early in dropping their fourth game in their last five outings.
Putnam City North jumped out in the first inning to a 2-0 lead as the Plainsmen committed two errors and a wild pitch to stake the Panthers to their early lead. PC North would add two more unearned runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Six of PC North’s seven runs in the game came with two outs.
The Plainsmen rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of Panthers pitcher Derek Beier’s temporary difficulties as Beier hit two batters and unleashed a wild pitch. Jake Walker’s bunt single was the only hit of the inning for the Plainsmen.
Beiers settled down later though and kept the Plainsmen off balance at times.
“That was a really gutty performance by him (Beiers),” PC North head coach Rod Richardson said afterward.
“He had to come back on short notice and did a really nice job for us.”
The teams traded runs in the fourth inning before PC North put the game out of reach with a pair of runs in the sixth inning.
The Plainsmen scored once in their half of the sixth but their rally was cut short when Christian Rodriguez was thrown out at the plate following a single by Haden Houska to end the inning.
“We had a chance but didn’t make some plays,” Enid head coach James Peoples said. “We were hitting the ball pretty hard at people but we just can’t seem to get the breaks right now. But it’s gonna even out.
“We’re going to get right back at it. This is a resilient bunch and we are going to be ready for Midwest City.”
Enid squares off with Midwest City at 7 tonight. With the win, PC North is now 2-0 in the tournament and will battle Tulsa Union at 4:30 p.m. today for a berth in the tournament championship game.
EDMOND NORTH 8, WESTMOORE 6
In the opening game of the day, Edmond North plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning to hold off Westmoore 8-6.
“Baseball is a funny game,” Edmond North skipper Karl King said. “As long as you stay with it, anything can happen. The kids didn’t quit and we had a lot go wrong but we stayed with it.”
Trailing 6-3 in the top of the seventh, Edmond North fought back and garnered three runs to tie the score. Senior hurler Garrett Molinsky pitched a complete game, allowing omly a single in the seventh and eighth to close the book on Westmoore.
In the seventh, the Huskies struck when junior Sean Nobles led off with a double. Junior Joe Robinson walked and junior Zach Barton singled to load the bases.
With two outs, junior A.J. Leingang drilled a 2-1 pitch to right-center field that rolled deep and cleared the bases to tie the game at 6-6..
In the top of the eighth, junior Chase Gibson doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Nobles reached on a fielders choice and proceeded to swipe second base and score on a double by Gibson to give the Huskies a 8-6 edge.
In the bottom of the inning with the game on the line, Molinsky gave up a lone single after one out. The next two batters were erased to give Molinsky the complete game win.
Tulsa Union 5 Midwest City 3
Tulsa Union came out swinging and scored four runs in the first two innings to defeat Midwest City 5-3.
Union stranded 10 runners and Midwest City left nine on the pond.
“We left people on base and had base-running mistakes and that was tyhe difference in the ballgame,” Midwest skipper Craig Troxell said. “We have to run the bases better and get timely hitting.”
Union starter Zach Ziegenhorn allowed only four hits until the fifth inning when he gave up four straight hits and got the hook from Newkirk. Sophomore Zach McNally pitched the rest of the way.
YUKON 8, SOUTHMOORE 7
Yukon defeated Southmoore 8-7 in a five-run last inning win that was spearheaded by a monstrous two-run home run to the deep reaches of right field by Millers senior Cisco Factor.
The Millers fought back for the win after being down 7-0 heading into the fifth inning. Yukon scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
