ENID —
Enid Majors (27-19) took their first step toward a possible Connie Mack state baseball championship with a resounding 8-0 run-rule victory over Oklahoma City Broncos (10-23) at David Allen Memorial Ballpark Tuesday night.
Lawson King continued his hot pitching in the victory, with a two-hit shutout performance to win his third game in a row. King only has surrendered four hits during the streak, which includes a no-hitter.
“He has been there for us and that’s why I went with him in the first game,” said Majors coach Chris Jensen. “Not taking anything away from our other starters, but Lawson has had the hot hand lately.”
The Majors didn’t waste any time, jumping out front 3-0 in the first inning.
A walk and a wild pitch put the Majors’ Blake Randall on second and designated hitter Dillon Walker drove him in for a 1-0 lead. Advancing to third on a fielder’s choice, Walker scored on a Haden Houska RBI single.
After stealing second, Houska scored after two wild pitches from the Broncos’ Glenn Elmore.
In the second frame, Enid kept the runs coming, plating four more to go up 7-0 on four hits. Joe Black drove home a run with a sacrifice fly. After a groundout, Walker singled in Cameron Hill for his second RBI. With two out and Walker on, catcher Christian Pacheco sent a 1-0 fastball off the top of the left field brick wall for a two-run homer and the 7-0 margin.
From there it was all King, who pitched out of a jam in the fourth.
Having only surrendered a single in the first, the Enid High School senior allowed a single after two were out in the fourth inning. King hit the next batter, followed by his fourth walk of the night to load the bases.
Getting ahead in the count 0-1, King coaxed a meek grounder back to the mound to snuff out the Broncos’ rally.
In the bottom of the fifth, with the Majors needing one run to end the game on a run-rule, Cody Coats took first after being hit by a pitch, swiped second and went to third on a high throw from the catcher that sailed into center field on the steal.
With one out, Trent Troxell plated the final run on a sacrifice fly to end the game.
“Anytime you’re in a tournament like this, It is always good to go out and take care of business,” Jensen said. “We did that from the get-go.
With the victory, the Majors will play the Enid Minors, a 2-1 winner over Edmond Stars earlier Tuesday, at 7:30 tonight. Austin Kretchmar will pitch for the Majors against southpaw Matt Craig of the Minors.
“We will come out with Austin on the mound,” Jensen said. “It will be a very close game with the Minors. It will take more of what we did tonight to beat them. The defense played well behind Lawson and they stayed with it and fought hard.
“The Minors have shown a lot of good character the last two or three weeks just like they have all summer. We are expecting a good, hard-fought game with them. We see those guys on a daily basis and it is great for our program that both teams came out the first day of the tournament and got a win.’’
