OKLAHOMA CITY — —
Dale used some early power hitting and clutch pitching by Evan Anderson to shut out Pioneer, 5-0 in the first round of the Class 2A state baseball tournament at Dolese Park Thursday.
The Mustangs managed only one hit — a single by Brett McNaughton in the third — but left eight men on base in finishing the season at 30-8.
Anderson walked five and struck out eight in putting out fires all afternoon.
“He was wildly effective,’’ said Pioneer coach Dave Riesen. “He was always falling behind, but he was able to come back with a 3-1 changeup or a 2-0 curveball. He was able to pitch backward in the count, which made him effective. We had runners all over the place, but we couldn’t get a hit when we needed it.’’
Riesen said his batters did not use their usual discipline at the plate.
“We’re a better hitting team than what we showed today,’’ Riesen said. “It was frustrating. He was a good pitcher, but he wasn’t throwing that much better that anyone we have seen this year. We took a lot of pitches we should have swung at and swung at some pitches we should have taken.’’
McNaughton (7-2) took the loss for Pioneer. He allowed eight hits while striking out eight and walking two.
McNaughton, Riesen said, got the ball up early which the No. 3-ranked Pirates took advantage of.
Three of Dale’s first seven batters — Turner Coon, Dalton Streber and Jace Flewallen homered as the Pirates scored three runs in the first and another in the second.
Dale added a run in the fifth.
“Brett got off to a rocky start,’’ Riesen said, “but he sucked it up and battled. He pitched well the last five innings. He was a competitor.’’
The Mustangs did not commit an error in the field.
Haden Hedges and Spencer Regina are the team’s only two seniors. McNaughton was one of five sophomores who started for the Mustangs, who reached the state tournament for the first time since 2006 and the third time in school history.
“It was definitely a feather in our cap that we got to the state tournament,’’ Riesen said. “Hopefully, this is something we can build on. It will be tough to replace our two seniors. We will need some kids to step up. The summer will be big for us to take the next step.’’
