EHS cagers earn split at Bruce Gray Invitational

EDMOND, Okla. — Playing without freshman Andi Pierce, lost for the season after suffering a concussion and fractured right shoulder following a 4-wheeler accident, the Enid Pacers still had little trouble dispatching Star Spencer 59-43 in the opening round of the Bruce Gray Invitational Thursday night at Deer Creek High School..

The ninth-ranked Pacers were never seriously challenged in the contest, sprinting out to an 8-0 lead and building a 29-19 lead by halftime.

Enid came out strong in the second half and built its lead to 44-27 by the end of the third quarter and eased its way to the 59-43 win.

The Pacers were led by Courtney Chelf’s 15 points. She was joined in double digit scoring by Haven Bay who had 14 points and Abby Lee, who finished with 13 points.

The victory improved the Pacers’ overall record to 12-2 on the season.

Enid will face Putnam City North, wich defeated Putnam City West earlier Thursday, in today’s  semifinal. Tip off is set for 4 p.m.

Host Deer Creek plays Mustang in the other girls semifinal today.

Plainsmen rally falls short

The Plainsmen fell 56-54 to Mustang in the opening round and will play Western Heights in the consolation bracket today at 11:30 a.m.

Enid battled back throughout the entire contest after falling behind 17-7 after the first quarter. The Plainsmen made it a four-point game at 19-15 at halftime and trailed by six, 36-30 after three.

The Plainsmen rallied late as Jemarcus Jackson’s bucket with 3:15 left knotted the game at 45-45, but two Mustang three-pointers kept Enid at bay and Mustang closed the game out down the stretch at the foul line. Enid never led in the contest.

The loss, Enid’s third-straight, dropped the Plainsmen to 4-10 overall. Enid was led by Correll Baker’s 22 points. Aaron Austin had 11.
