Plainsmen, Pacers sweep past Guthrie

GUTHRIE, Okla. — Enid got its post-holiday basketball schedule off to a strong start Friday, as the boys and girls teams each came away with victories at Guthrie.

The Plainsmen (4-7) won their second straight game behind a team-high 15 points from Correll Baker, defeating Guthrie 57-51.

Enid jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the contest, but the Blue Jays (1-6) battled back to take a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and kept the game close until the latter stages before Enid was able to secure the win.

Baker scored the Plainsmen’s final four points of the game, putting Enid up 55-51 and then secured the win with a pair of free throws for the final margin of 57-51. Baker also made a strong defensive play with Enid up 55-51 to force a Guthrie turnover. He scored 12 of his 15 points in the final quarter.

Baker was joined in double figures by Aaron Austin who added 13 points. Deon Parker added nine.

Guthrie was led by Jerrick Warren’s game-high 17 points.

The Plainsmen are off until Jan. 15 when they travel to Stillwater.

Enid 45, Guthrie 42 (G)

In the nightcap, the No. 10 Enid Pacers withstood a second-half Guthrie rally to defeat the Lady Bluejays 45-42. The win was the Pacers’ sixth-straight victory and raised their record to 7-1.

The Pacers never trailed in the contest after building an 11-point lead after the first quarter. However, Guthrie (3-4) pulled to within 41-40 in the fourth quarter before the Pacers put the game away down the stretch at the foul line.

Enid was led in scoring by Haven Bay who had a game-high 17 points.

Pacers’ leading scorer Courtney Chelf added 15 points but was held to just two second-half points after encountering foul trouble that had her on the bench for much of the second-half before fouling out of the contest with 1:38 remaining in the game. Chelf scored the game’s first five points and 13 of her points came in the first quarter.

With Chelf on the bench, Bay was able to pick up the slack, including converting at the foul line late in the game.

Micayla Haynes led Guthrie with 15 points.

Each team committed 22 turnovers.

The Pacers next play Coweta at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in an opening-round game at the Muskogee Shrine Tournament.
