ENID — CANTON — Dillan Schoonmaker and Kolby Hysell scored on their tries to help lead the Canton High School rugby team to a 12-3 win over Edmond Memorial in the school’s season opener Saturday afternoon at the high school pitch.
“We played very good, very aggressive,” Canton coach Rob Davis said. “We dominated the scrums. You could tell it was our first match. There were quite a few penalties on us. We tackled well. We didn’t give up a single try”
Schoonmaker had a 60-meter return for Canton’s first lead and Hysell scored on a 10-meter run after a scrum.
Coby Moody added a two-point kick after Schoonmaker’s score to give the Bulldogs a 7-3 lead over Memorial.
Canton travels to face Jenks at 1 p.m. Saturday at Victory Life High School.
NOTE: Colby Hagler, Hysell and Torre Meat, are on the spring preseason All-State team, which was released by Vype Magazine. ... Davis said seven players missed Saturday’s match because of commitments to play basketball.
