EHS cagers win thrillers from Ike

LAWTON — Enid’s Rani Melvin made the most of her only basket of the game against Lawton Eisenhower Saturday.

The Pacers junior guard hit a running five-foot jumper at the buzzer to give Enid a 39-38 victory over the Lady Eagles.

The boys game was equally thrilling as the Plainsmen came back from an 18-7 first-quarter deficit to beat the Eagles, 74-72 in overtime behind 27 points from Chris Fitzpatrick and 20 from Gibson Rose.

Melvin’s heroics were set up when the Lady Eagles missed a free throw. She virtually hurdled a Eisenhower defender for the winning shot, according to EHS assistant coach Robb Mills.

“She was excited,’’ Mills said. “All of the girls were excited. This was a huge win for us. We needed a win like this to get some confidence going into the playoffs.’’

The Pacers, 12-10, overcame a 13-4 first-quarter deficit. They had spent most of the game trying to play catch up. The Lady Eagles helped with a poor showing at the foul line.

“We just started slow,’’ Mills said. “We just kept fighting back the whole game. They couldn’t hit free throws which gave us a chance.’’

Haley Rasp scored 15 points to match her season high. Courtney Chelf had eight points.

Rasp was 7-of-10 from the foul line. She pulled down five offensive rebounds in the second quarter in which EHS outscored the Lady Eagles 12-7.

Rasp’s teammates, Mills said, picked up the slack when the EHS junior center got in foul trouble. Bayli Jones had a strong game defensively.

“The girls blocked out real well and rebounded real well,’’ Mills said.

Fitzpatrick’s big heroics came on defense when he stole the ball in the last 30 seconds to set up a basket by A.J. Smith to send the game into overtime at 67-67.

Fitzpatrick gave the Plainsmen the lead for good, 73-70 with a 3-pointer in overtime. That was Enid’s first lead of the game.

Fitzpatrick (4) and Rose (5) combined for nine 3-point baskets. All of Rose’s treys came in the second half.

D’Andre Wright, who had 26 points for the Eagles, missed a shot at the buzzer which would have sent the game into a second overtime.

“Our kids really turned it up in the second half,’’ said Enid assistant coach Billy Karr. “After last night (66-53 loss to Lawton) and the slow start, everything looked pretty slim.’’

The Plainsmen’s comeback, Karr said, showed the character of the team.

“This proves we can go on the road and beat teams which are more athletic than we are by the eye test,’’ he said. “We just took it one possession at a time.’’

Wright had 18 points in the first half, but was held to eight the second half.

“That was one of the keys to the game,’’ Karr said. “We did a better job limiting his touches and playing post defense.’’

Alex Patterson had 10 points for EHS, now 13-8.

The Pacers and Plainsmen will return home Monday for the first time since Jan. 5 when they host Sand Springs in a 6:30 p.m. girls-boys doubleheader.
