EHS boys risk league lead

Plainsmen try to break 3-game losing streak

ENID — Enid’s boys will put their Centennial Conference lead on the line tonight when they travel to Stillwater for the second half of a basketball doubleheader at 8. The girls tip off at 6:30.

The Plainsmen, 10-7 overall and 4-1 in conference, will be trying to end a three-game losing streak after a controversial 66-57 loss to Harding Charter Prep Friday.

The Pioneers, 7-11 and 3-2, are riding a three-game winning streak. Stillwater had its second lowest scoring output of the season in a 45-38 loss to the Plainsmen Dec. 15 at the Mabee Center. Ponca City and Stillwater are tied for second in the Centennial race.

The Pioneers were without guard Jordan Pound in the first meeting. Pound, who led Stillwater to two wins over Enid is back in the Pioneers lineup.

“They always play better at home,’’ said Enid coach T.J. Scholz. “We’re going to have play well to win.’’

Class 5A and 6A teams submitted their records to the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association Monday for playoff consideration. The game won’t have any impact on playoff seedings, which are scheduled to be announced Wednesday.

Scholz said the game still is very important for EHS because of  the conference implications and to get back on the winning track.

The Plainsmen still arel smarting from the Harding loss after shooting 13 free throws to 39 for the Eagles.

Scholz said while EHS played well enough to win, they didn’t rebound well — something it will have to correct against Stillwater.

“We gave them a lot of second chances which hurt us more than the officiating did,’’ Scholz said. “We’re going to have to work on that because Stillwater works hard for rebounds, too. We took some bad shots against Harding, too.’’

Chris Fitzpatrick, who had 15 points the first Stillwater game, leads the Plainsmen attack with a 25.3 average. He is followed by Alex Patterson (10.5), Gibson Rose (7.7), Clint Gamble (5.9) and Zach Siewert (2.3).

Patterson matched his high game for the season with a 21-point effort against Harding.

The Pacers (10-8, 2-3) will try to build on a 62-38 win over Harding Friday.  It was the first time EHS had scored more than 60 points in a game this season.

“We had 18 points against Ponca City (on Jan. 26) so I hope we can find some more consistency scoring,’’ said Enid coach Layne Jones.

The Lady Pioneers (7-11, 2-3) are coming off a 52-47 win over Sand Springs Friday. Stillwater lost to Enid 49-41 Dec. 15. LaNesha Middleton led the Lady Pioneers with 11 points.

“We got to stop Middleton,’’ Jones said. “If we shut her down, we’ll be OK. Any game we play from now on is going to be tough.’’

Courtney Chelf, who had 12 points the first meeting, leads the Enid attack with a 12.9 average. She is followed by Rani Melvin (7.7), Haley Rasp (6.1), Regan Crowl (4.7) and Jayci Wehrenberg (4.3).

“This game doesn’t affect the rankings, but we need to start playing well if we’re going to have a chance in the playoffs,’’ Jones said.

KGWA Radio (960 AM) will air the games.
