ENID, Okla. —
It is the end of October and that only means one thing if you’re a race fan in the state of Oklahoma: Enid Speedway Winter Nationals time.
The 47th annual running of this event at the Garfield County Fairgrounds is promoted this year by Park City, Kan.-based Speedways, Inc.
The doubleheader kicks off Saturday afternoon with a complete show featuring modifieds, sport modifieds, factory stocks, lite mods and pure stocks. Modifieds, sport mods and factory stocks will compete for the top six row starting positions in Sunday’s card with mod lites and pure stocks running a complete show for the nationals’ crowns.
On championship Sunday, late models and street stocks will run a full show with modifieds, Southern sport modifieds and factory stocks competing in last chance qualifiers and championship features.
Gates will open at 11 a.m. both days with racing slated for a 2 p.m. start.
Hometown driver Kip Hughes took home the Winter Nationals crown in sport modified in 2011 with a daring victory run in the main event. Local drivers John Whitley and Tyson Ashlock captured the Winter Nationals titles in factory and pure stock, respectively.

Glencoe duo makes strong introduction
The last time Nate Melton and Claytin Beaver played together, they left the field losers of a season-ending 12-5 Class A state quarterfinal.
On Friday, each of them in Enid Majors blue instead of Glencoe red, and things went closer to plan.
Melton was the Majors’ opening-day starter, introducing himself to Enid with six strikeouts in three innings, topping 90 mph with a fastball that rarely ended anywhere but Beaver’s mitt in a 7-1 Majors win. -
