The 10-team field for the 2011 NJCAA Division II World Series which will begin Friday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark is set.
Teams from Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arizona, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Mississ-ippi, North Carolina, Connecticut and Maryland will be represented.
Making the field for this year’s chase to the trophy are Gateway Community College (Ariz.), Des Moines Area Community (Iowa), Madison College (Wis.), Kellogg Community (Mich.), Jones County Junior College (Miss.), Western Oklahoma State, Southeastern Community (N.C.), UConn Avery Point (Conn.), Heartland Community College (Minn.) and Cecil College (Md.).
“This field is sprinkled with a lot of tradition,” Tournament Director Bill Mayberry said. “We have some newcomers and this year we will have a new champion because the champions from the last two years (Parkland College in 2009 and LSU Eunice in 2010) all lost out in their regionals.”
There will be a number of key players in the Series including former Enid Majors’ standout Eddie Cervantes of Western Oklahoma.
“The players are rich in tradition as well,” Mayberry said. “There will be some players at the top level of baseball playing in the World Series.
“Western Oklahoma played real well in their regionals and UConn Avery Point beat them last year. Heartland is the top ranked team in the nation.
“History will be such a huge factor. You just can’t overlook experience in the World Series.”
The opening ceremonies will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
