EDMOND — —
Enid Plainsmen wrapped up the baseball regular season against Edmond Memorial and Saturday, the final score underlining a persistent problem for Enid in 2011.
The Plainsmen (12-23) had the game tied at 6-6 in the fourth inning but couldn’t jump ahead, losing 9-6. For the season, the Plainsmen are 3-11 in games decided by two runs or less. They stranded seven runners in Saturday’s loss.
“It has been like that all year long,” Enid coach James Peoples said. “Same thing. We needed the key hits, but we didn’t get them.
“It’s just one of them things. We have to keep fighting.”
Edmond Memorial scored pairs of runs in the first three innings, and a three-run fifth made the difference.
Enid plated three runs in the second on singles by senior Blake Fer-guson and freshman Jackson Walker and a double by senior Colter LeGrant. Senior Christian Rodriguez accounted for another run on a fielder’s choice.
In the fourth, the Plainsmen came out swinging and scored three runs on singles from LeGrant, senior Cedric Rose, junior Haden Houska and senior Joe Black. Senior Dillon Walker picked up an RBI on a ground-out to second base.
The 2011 regular season is behind Enid. The new season, the playoffs, open Wednesday for Enid at Owasso when the Plainsmen take on Tulsa Union at 4 p.m.
“It is a new season,” Peoples said. “We are going down there and see if we can take care of Tulsa Union.
“We have to bounce back. We have some guys really starting to swing it and hopefully, that will carry on.”
