— Mike Phillips seemed tense during his first inning of pitching this season, giving up two runs on three hits during the opening frame.
But as he settled down, Enid began hitting, and the Plainsmen went on to crush the Oklahoma City Broncos 10-4 Thursday night at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
Phillips pitched six innings for the Plainsmen, striking out five batters and walking only two. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits.
Enid coach James Peoples said it felt good to open the season with a win, especially after how the game started.
“Mike Phillips went out and he threw strikes early,” Peoples said. “I think he kinda got squeezed a little bit behind the plate but he went out and he pitched a good game for us tonight.”
Shortstop Seth Floyd led the Plainsmen with three runs on two hits. He also drove in a run.
Second baseman Colter LeGrant added two runs on two walks and a double.
Cole Sundbye had a productive game for the Broncos. The Oklahoma City second baseman drove in three runs, two of which came on a single in the first.
The Broncos led off the game with two runs in the top of the first, but Enid would respond.
LeGrant received a free pass and Floyd followed with a single.
Three batters after an Erick Ramirez single that drove in a run, Lawson King made it to first base when Jake Decker made a bad throw and two more runs scored.
Enid’s next game is Saturday at Southmoore.
