Bombers eliminate Plainsmen

OWASSO —  —  Enid’s baseball team learned Thursday it will be the state academic champion with an average grade point average of 3.76.

But the Plainsmen earned anything but an “A’’ in being eliminated from the Class 6A regional baseball tournament.

Defending state champion Owasso routed the Plainsmen 20-0 in the winners bracket finals.

Enid committed eight errors, walked five and left 10 runners on base in being eliminated by Midwest City 10-7 in the losers bracket finals.

The Plainsmen ended the season with a 18-16 record.

Enid managed only two hits against Owasso, which had 18 hits in scoring five runs in the first and second, nine in the third and one in the fifth.

Rams starter Dylan Bundy struck out five of the six batters he faced. EHS starter Tanner Leon left after giving up a walk and back-to-back-to-back doubles.

Enid, which played nearly a perfect game in a 14-0 win over Midwest City in the first round Wednesday, couldn’t seem to do anything right Thursday.

Enid starter Mike Phillips left the game with arm problems in the second trailing 2-1. Things went downhill after that.

Midwest City scored three runs in the third, thanks to two bases-loaded walks.

Enid committed three errors in the fourth when the Bombers scored three times to go up 8-3. The Bombers scored an unearned run in the fifth and added another in the sixth on a bases-loaded squeeze play.

The day had started off well for the Plainsmen. Joe Black tripled in the first and scored on a sacrifice fly by Seth Floyd.

Enid took advantage of some Midwest City generosity in the fourth. Dillon Walker walked and scored after three wild pitches. Joe Phillips drove in Colter LeGrant who had walked. However, Midwest City starter Joel Davis struck out Brady Baugh and got Black to pop up to end the threat.

LeGrant doubled in Erick Ramirez, who had walked to cut the lead to 8-5 in the fifth. EHS, though, left two runners on.

The Plainsmen cut the lead to 9-7 with three runs in the    sixth. Miguel Bretado drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run. Walker greeted reliever John Cody with a two-RBI single  but LeGrant was retired to end the inning.
