Owasso ends Pacers' season

SHAWNEE —  — SHAWNEE — The good news for the Pacers in a Class 6A regional elimination game with Owasso Thursday was freshman Courtney Chelf had 22 points.

The bad news was the rest of her teammates had 11 points in a 42-33 loss to the Lady Rams.

The loss ended Enid’s season at 12-12. It was the fourth straight season the Pacers had been eliminated in the first round.

Enid was only 9-of-46 from the line and even that stat might be misleading.

The Pacers scored more than half of their points in the final five minutes of the game after Owasso, 15-8, had built up a 35-16 lead.

The Pacers did a good job on defense as Owasso was only 13-of-39 from the field. Susan Toben, headed for New Mexico, had 16 points, but she scored only six points after intermission.

“Bayli Jones did a great job on Toben,’’ said Enid coach Layne Jones. “I’m really proud of the girls. They did everything we needed to do to win, except score.’’

“We had some good looks, we just didn’t make our shots. I thought we played our second best defensive game of the season, but you not only play good defense so long, you have to be able to score.’’

The Pacers scored more than half of their points in the final five minutes of the game after Owasso, 15-8, had built up a 35-16 lead.

Enid, leading 7-5 after the first period, would make only one field goal for the next 20 minutes.

The Pacers were within striking distance at halftime, 19-14, but they were 0-of-14 from the field in the third quarter, managing only a Chelf free throw.

Jayci Wehrenberg scored Enid’s first field goal of the second half with a little more than four minutes remaining in the game.

The Pacers tied the game for the last time at 11-11 on a Chelf 3-pointer midway through the second period. Christina Phillips answered back with a three of her own to give the Lady Rams the lead for good, 14-11. That started an 8-0 Owasso spurt.

The Lady Rams scored the first six points of the third period before Chelf hit a free throw to make it 25-15.

It was the second time Owasso had beaten the Pacers this season. The Lady Rams trounced Enid 66-34 in the first round of the Skiatook Tournament Jan. 8.

The Pacers will return every player who participated Thursday. The only graduation loss is guard-forward Ty Washington, who was sidelined by a knee injury late in the season.

Jones said his team needs to spend more time in the gym to develop their shooting touch. He was not disappointed in the 12-12 season in what was considered to be a rebuilding year for EHS.

“I think we lost three games that we shouldn’t have had, but I think we exceeded our expectations from the preseason,’’ Jones said.
