Jets open season tonight

By Mark Rountree Sports Editor

After watching from the sidelines as a redshirt last year, Nolan Richardson will get a chance this season for the Northern Oklahoma College Enid Jets.

The 6-foot-2 point guard was the Tulsa World state Player of the Year two years ago.

"Nolan will be one of the top three or four players in Region II this year,'' said NOC Enid coach Greg Shamburg. "He's going to be a highly recruited (NCAA) Division I player."'

The Jets open the season tonight against the Oklahoma Christian junior varsity. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at the Mabee Center.

The NOC Enid women open the season Friday at Rose State. The Lady Jets host Butler County (Kan.) College at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The Jets will be out to improve on last year's 14-16 record, and Shamburg said the Jets have the players to do it as the program enters its fifth season.

"We're looking at making a run at the Region II title and going to the national tournament,'' said Shamburg. "We would be pretty disappointed if we didn't do better this year."'

Returning to the squad are 6-7 sophomores Rashad Moss and Jacoie Shivers.

Shamburg is looking for good things from Burlington's Jed Blevins, as well as freshmen Kendall Johnson, Matt Monroe, Robert Johnson, Joe Morgan and Jamel Potts.

The Jets' roster also includes three players from the East Coast in Brooklyn, N.Y., natives Francisco Altidor and Potts, and Lindon, N.J., native Donte Ross.

"All of these guys should give us a chance to win,'' said Shamburg.

The women's squad includes five returning players, including Jenni Williamson, Mara Kee, Chisholm's Ashley Holtzinger, Whitney James and Lacey Knox.

The team also includes a number of northwest Oklahoma talent in Okarche's Haley Myers, Lomega's Sheri Yost, Cimarron's Brandi Carpenter, Cherokee's Tana Turney and Ringwood's Amanda Davidson.
