OBA hosting art events



Oklahoma Bible Academy will presents its annual spring events today in the commons area and school auditorium beginning with “An Artistic Discovery at OBA” art show from 5 to 7 p.m., under the direction of art instructor Charlotte Williams.

The annual spring concert begins at 7 p.m. and will be directed by Kathy Jantz, band director, and choir director Dennis Lauderdale.

The events are free and open to the public.

The school play “God’s Favorite,” by Neil Simon, will begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium. This is a comedy similar to the story of Job in the Bible. Admission to the play is $3 per person.







Fairview team wins state



Fairview High School’s speech and debate team won the state championship last weekend at the state tournament held at the University of Oklahoma.

Four students came home with individual championships: Alishia Holdeman in original oratory, Jessica Bisel in monologue acting and the team of Jeff Unruh and Sam Davis in cross-examination debate. Unruh and Davis were repeat champions.

Five students were state runners-up in their respective events: Samantha Ali in original oratory, Madison Ewald in standard oratory, Sarahi Wilson and Jessica Bonitz in dramatic duet acting and Heather Glenn in monologue acting.

Ali teamed with Jason Robison and Jeremy French for third place in cross-examination debate

Students placing fourth were: Alex Eldridge in standard oratory and Ali in foreign extemporaneous speaking. Chad Eldred took fifth in Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Davis was sixth in domestic extemporaneous speaking. Glenn was sixth in poetry interpretation and, teamed with Amanda Collins, in dramatic duet acting.

This is the first time the school’s speech and debate team has won both the one-act play championship in the fall and the spring championship. Fairview last won the spring championship in 1988.

KHAEF to host golf tourney



Kremlin-Hillsdale Academic Enrichment Foundation is having its annual golf tournament at Meadowlake Golf Course May 19. The shotgun start is 9 a.m. Entry fee is $60 per person and the event will be a four-person team scramble with two flights of competition. Numerous prizes will be given away, including cash. Lunch also will be provided for the participants. Space is limited so early sign up is encouraged. Contact Tina Lunday at 402-4622 or Mike Riddle at 747-1150.

KHAEF also is looking for hole sponsors and door prize donations. For information on how to contribute to the cause, contact Lunday.

The mission of Kremlin-Hillsdale Academic Enrichment Foundation is to promote enriched educational opportunities which will produce innovative and creative learning activities for all youth in the Kremlin-Hillsdale Public Schools. Funds are raised exclusively through donations and special community activities such as the annual golf tournament. Funds then are distributed through grants for special-learning experiences for children of Kremlin-Hillsdale schools.







DCLA students grabs 1st in essay contest



Jake Kistler, a junior at Deer-Creek Lamont High School, recently placed first in the 2006 Law Day Essay Contest. The contest is sponsored by the Garfield and Grant County Bar Association.

Topic for the essay contest was “Liberty Under Law: Separate Branches, Balanced Powers.” Kistler wrote a three-page essay about current legal issues associated with President Bush’s power in authorizing searches of e-mails and phone tapping.

He was awarded a certificate and a $100 cash prize. He is the son of Anthony and Joyce Kistler, of Lamont.







Area students honored with OSU ag awards



Emily Kilian, Oklahoma State University agricultural communications student, was named the outstanding freshman in agricultural communications by the OSU Department of Agricul-tural Education, Commun-ications and Leadership.

This honor is given to students who distinguish themselves through leadership, academic accomplishments and organizational involvement.

Kilian is a sophomore from Medford and is an active member in Agricultural Communi-cators of Tomorrow, Leadership League, Chi Omega sorority and Ag Ambas-sadors.

Jona-thon Knopfel, Oklahoma State University agricultural leadership student, received the Huffer Memorial Scholarship from the OSU Department of Agricultural Education, Communications and Leadership.

The $500 scholarship is awarded to students who have strong academics and leadership qualities.

Knopfel is the executive director of OSU Alumni Association, member of the homecoming steering committee, student alumni association, Leadership League, Mortar Board secretary 2006-07, member of Alpha Zeta, Collegiate 4-H and Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.

Katy Gates, Oklahoma State University agricultural communications student, received the Agricultural Communications Alumni Scholarship from the OSU Department of Agricultural Education, Communications and Leadership.

The $250 award goes to students who show excellent academic achievement, leadership and abilities to contribute to the field of agricultural communications.

Gates is a freshman from Drummond. She is active in Agricultural Communicator of Tomorrow, Freshman in Transition program, Collegiate FFA and the Orange Peel Hospitality Committee.

The department of Agricultural Education, Communications and Leadership awarded and recognized nearly $52,000 in scholarships at the departmental awards reception April 3. These scholarships are funded by alumni donations and departmental supporters.







Cimarron senior earns leadership scholarship



Victoria Barnett, a senior at Cimarron High School, Lahoma, has been selected to receive a Presiden-tial Leadership Council Schol-arship at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa beginning with the fall 2007 semester. She is the daughter of Vern and Valerie Snethen of Enid.

The Presidential Leadership Council Scholarship covers all major expenses, including tuition for a maximum of 18 credit hours per semester, books, room and a five-day meal plan. It is a continuing scholarship for one year as long as the student maintains at least a 3.25 grade- point average per semester and is enrolled on the Tonkawa campus in a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester in an associate degree program

It also will entitle you to living accommodations on the honors floor in Bell Hall.







Goodwin named national award winner



United States Achievement Academy has announced Courtney N. Goodwin of Enid has been named a United States National Award winner in foreign language.

This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. The academy recognizes fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Goodwin, who attends Waller Junior High School, was nominated for this national award by Jeanice Polwort, a teacher at the school. Goodwin will appear in the United States Achievement Academy’s official yearbook, which is published nationally.

Goodwin is the daughter of Todd and Shelly Goodwin of Enid and the granddaughter of Bob and Karen Goodwin and Bobby and Olive Carter, all of Enid.
