Longfellow students help host St. Patrick’s Day soup kitchen feast

Students in Elyse Lovell’s eighth-grade history class recently partnered with Xavier Catholic Church, Our Daily Bread and Jumbo Foods to host a St. Patrick’s Day feast at the soup kitchen.

Longfellow Junior High School sixth-hour students decorated for the event, and Jumbo Foods donated many of the food items needed. Garfield Elementary School officials assisted as well by donating materials needed for the decorations.

Lovell said the project allowed the class “to celebrate our rich American heritage,” as well as to learn about St. Patrick’s Day. The service project also gave students the opportunity to work closely with community partners.

Parents assisting with decorating included Eula Wilson, Pilar Ramirez, Alfonso Reyes, Ana Torres and Sam and Angela Van Brunt.

Students assisting included Frank Gonzalez, Ava Wilson, Josh Byrum, Anjelica Lopez, Josh Francis, Lloyd Buckley, Herman Lopez, Christian Delarosa, Bill Said, Nubia Ramirez, Carlo Hernandez, Kimberly Hamilton, Jolita Bajo, Christeena Pelletier, Noe Reyes, Edgar Resendez, Jerred Cooper, Ana Ponce, Maria Martinez, R.J. Potter and Kathryn Saltsman.

NWOSU’s freshman connection slated April 18 on Alva campus

High school seniors and parents will be on the Alva campus for Freshman Connection April 18. This day is designed for students who are planning to attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University in fall.

The layout of the day has changed this year, but still offers students an opportunity to see the campus, meet with faculty and enroll early for the fall semester. There will be a morning session and an afternoon session. The morning session begins at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at noon. The afternoon session will begin at 1:30 p.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m. The sessions include registration, campus welcome, advisement time and optional parent and campus tours.

“This day is more tailored to the individual and shortens the length of the day for students,” said Matt Adair, director of recruitment. “It’s designed for people who can’t commit to an entire day.”

Before students can enroll they must complete an application for admission and pay the $15 application fee, provide a copy of the seven-semester high school transcript and provide proof of ACT scores.

“Anyone considering attending Northwestern should attend Freshman Connection and know that it is an incredible opportunity to meet with an adviser, get questions answered and put together your college course schedule,” Adair said.

Students can register the day of the event or online at www.nwosu.edu/recruit/freshmanconnection.html http://www.nwosu.edu/recruit/freshmanconnection.html.

For information contact the Office of Recruitment at (580) 327-8546 or at recruit@nwosu.edu.

Union Pacific Foundation grants funds to principal’s partnership

Union Pacific Foundation is granting $76,700 to fund The Principals’ Partnership and projects submitted by nonprofit organizations in Oklahoma.

The Principals’ Partnership, the signature giving program of Union Pacific Foundation, will continue to serve as a professional resource to 11 public high school principals in Oklahoma. Additionally, the Foundation is providing grants to eight nonprofit organizations in the state.

“Union Pacific is honored to continue our association with the great organizations that help to make the communities in which our employees live and work a better place,” said Jim Young, chairman and CEO of Union Pacific Railroad. “We are also very proud to continue supporting public high school principals through The Principals’ Partnership. Union Pacific created the partnership because we believe strong leaders build strong schools and ultimately, stronger communities.”

The 2007 Principals’ Partnership schools in Oklahoma include both Enid High School and Lincoln Academy.

The Principals’ Partnership assists approximately 1,000 principals with responsibilities for more than 1 million students.

The six-year-old program helps fulfill principals’ leadership needs through a number of opportunities, including research, networking and workshops. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, the Partnership starts with the professional needs of each principal and offers an individually customized program to meet those needs.

The program is offered at no cost to the school, the district or the principal.

The Principals’ Partnership is offered to public high school principals in key communities served by Union Pacific. For the second straight year, the program extends to principals in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

EHS sophomore Echard named HOBY conference participant

Ramie Echard, a sophomore at Enid High School, has been selected to represent the school at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership conference, more commonly known as HOBY. The conference will be June 14-17 at the University of Oklahoma.

HOBY is an interactive educational program designed to prepare youth to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community. Students who attend the 3-day seminars interact with leaders in business, government, education, media and non profits. The seminars consist of question-and-answer sessions, small group discussions and leadership exercises, which assist the future leaders to better understand the meaning of leadership and begin to identify their own particular leadership strengths.
