Former THS student named to list



Joshua Crain, a sophomore and English major at Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Mich., was named to the Dean’s list for the 2005 fall semester.

Crain is a 2004 graduate of Timberlake High School and the son of Ron and Barbara Crain of Helena.

Hillsdale College, a private four-year liberal arts institution, was founded in 1844.







K-H wins conference crown



Seven of the eight schools in the Cherokee Strip Conference met in Kremlin in early January for a round robin academic tournament.

Kremlin-Hillsdale beat all six teams to claim the championship. Oklahoma Bible Academy lost only to KHS, 280-250, to take second place. Timberlake, Lomega and Wakita tied for third but Lomega took third on points, and Wakita was fourth and Timberlake was fifth. Deer Creek-Lamont finished sixth and Burlington seventh. Medford did not participate.

Kremlin-Hillsdale, OBA and Lomega received awards at half time of the girls finals of the recent Cherokee Strip Conference basketball tournament in the Chisholm Trail Coliseum.

A student from each school was awarded a conference all-star trophy. All-stars were: Becky Atzenweiler, Burlington; Brady Brewer, Deer Creek-Lamont; Max Fosmire, Kremlin-Hillsdale; Tim Corrigan, Lomega; Trey Maltby, Medford; Neal Mooers, OBA; Leah Burchfiel, Timberlake; and Justin Cox, Wakita.







Pioneer band students set concert



Pioneer Junior High Band will present a walkers concert at 9 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood Mall. Pioneer bands have been performing the concerts for walkers who exercise before stores open at the mall for several years.

This year’s seventh- and eighth-grade band under the direction of Sherri Lohmann has nearly a dozen entertaining and challenging pieces to perform.

Pioneer fifth-grade band performed their first-ever concert Jan. 23, presenting the annual “Around the World” concert for parents, grandparents and students in kindergarten through third grade. Each section of the band was featured.







Pioneer student to perform at OSSBDA All-State concert



Griffin Maxwell, Pioneer junior, will be the principal euphonium in the OSSBDA All-State Band that will perform in concert at 3 p.m. Feb. 11, at Hillsdale College in Moore. The band will be under the direction of noted composer and clinician James Swearingen. The concert will culminate a three-day clinic.







SWOSU to host summer program



Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford will be hosting a four-week summer program for graduating high school seniors pursuing degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

SURE-STEP will be held June 5-30 on the SWOSU campus, and applications are now being accepted. Program Director Brian Campbell said the program provides an exciting opportunity for underrepresented or minority graduating high school seniors.

SWOSU, in association with four other universities, was awarded a $2 million grant over a five-year period from the National Science Foundation to provide the programs.

During the four-week program, students will have lectures and laboratories in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students also will be trained in skills necessary to cope with college studies like time management and study skills. Room and board for the four-week period will be provided by SURE-STEP. Participants will live in the SWOSU residence halls, eat in the cafeteria and be given an opportunity to experience college and campus life first hand.

SWOSU will select up to 20 students for the program. Students who participate in the summer program and attend SWOSU the following academic year will be awarded a six-semester credit hour waiver and a $500 stipend each semester for their first year of college study.

“This is a terrific opportunity, a strong program, and a great way to begin a university career,” Campbell said.

OHEHS seeks hall of fame nominees



The Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society (OHEHS) is seeking nominations for induction into the 13th annual Higher Education Hall of Fame. The event will be held Oct. 3 in the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

Deadline for submission of nomination materials is April 17. OHEHS, a non-profit organization, functions to preserve the history of higher education and promote awareness of the vital role institutions play in the social, cultural and economic development of the state.

The purpose of the hall of fame is to recognize worthy individuals and, by example, encourage others to excel in their efforts on behalf of higher learning.
