Local students elected to state office

Three Enid High School students recently were elected to positions at the Oklahoma Federation of Teenage Republicans State Convention held Oct. 29 at the state Capitol.

The state delegates, nine of whom were from Enid, elected Benjamin Barker as chairman, George Singer as second vice chairman and Elijah Lavicky as treasurer. All three officers are seniors at Enid High School.

As chairman, Barker will oversee all committees and act as the presiding chair over all meetings. Singer will act as membership coordinator and oversee all district directors and individual chapters. Lavicky will keep all records of financial transactions of the federation as well as oversee all state fundraising events.

"I plan on working with the delegates from each congressional district to plan the most efficient means of fund disbursement and accumulation," Lavicky said.

The three were recognized Friday, along with two other members of the Enid High School Republican Club, at the Garfield County Republican Women's luncheon for their achievements.

"I believe that the Republican Party's policies are positive, and I hope to increase youth involvement in local and state politics," Barker said.

This stance has led the Teenage Republicans to begin organizing early to increase voter participation in next year's elections.

"The youth of Oklahoma will be a significant factor in swaying the upcoming senatorial and gubernatorial races toward a Republican victory," Singer said,

In the quarterfinals, Drummond Gold, the top seed, beat Pioneer; Drummond Blue edged Wakita; OBA crunched Corn Bible Academy; and Timberlake disposed of Canton in a close match.

Each team played three other schools in its pool. The seven pool champions plus one wild-card team (in this case, Wakita) advanced to the single-elimination tournament.

Kremlin-Hillsdale High School National Honor Society raised about $500 from the tournament.
