Rivalry between Cowboys, Sooners is hotter than ever

ENID, Okla. — Not every state college football fan is thrilled with the overtime outcome, but this year’s Bedlam game was undoubtedly an instant classic.

The Cowboy faithful may remember the “moral victories” under Pat Jones, but Oklahoma State has a different sheriff in town. Head coach Mike Gundy proclaimed “there’s no second place,” and he’s exactly right.

“The truth is, the better your program is, the more success you have, the more highly regarded you are, the harder it is to lose,” Gundy said after losing the seventh time in eight tries. “You get in a World Series, a Super Bowl, a state championship game and you lose, it’s a crushing blow, and the only reason is you’ve taken it to another level. For the most part, this program is at a different level.”

The Cowboys are at a higher level, and we’re especially proud of Enid standout Clint Chelf and his outstanding leadership at quarterback.

The Pokes still are competing for better bowl placement as OSU plays at 11 a.m. Saturday at Baylor.

Although OSU led for the majority of the game Saturday, Sooner Magic finally arrived in OT with a 51-48 win Saturday in Norman.

Now Oklahoma faces Texas Christian University this weekend. With an OU win and Kansas State loss to Texas, the Sooners still could claim a Big 12 title. (If K-State loses and Kent State beats Northern Illinois for the MAC Championship, the Golden Flashes could earn a BCS berth. But we predict that’s another column for our sports editor.)

Yes, sports fans, this weekend will be another interesting weekend for college football. But we doubt it will be as exciting as last Saturday.

Was that the best game in Bedlam history? It’s the best one we can remember, regardless of the outcome.
