Innovation at Broadway Tower a great sign

Thumbs up for an innovative plan to turn part of Enid’s historic Broadway Tower into a boutique hotel.

Boutique hotels often contain luxury facilities of varying sizes in unique or intimate settings.

Johnny Peart, the building’s new owner, said the project will help fill Enid’s need for downtown hotel space. He plans to work around the vacant floors — about half the building — with each hotel room having the same footprint.

Peart also plans to put in a restaurant on the main floor, as well as an internet cafe on its east side. A variety of shops will line the mezzanine.

That’s great news, as far as we’re concerned.

Thumbs down to a Brazilian nightclub owner blaming “the whole country” after more than 230 people died in the recent catastrophe there.

The owner also blamed architects and inspectors charged with making sure the building was safe, according to The Associated Press.

Playing the blame game is pretty weak. No wonder he “regretted having ever been born” because of his grief over the fire.

Thumbs up for the second annual Junior Welfare League’s Warm Your Heart 5K and one-mile fun run recently held in downtown Enid.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Campaign.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. JWL wanted to do something to promote awareness of such a big health issue in our nation, and specifically Oklahoma.

Title sponsors were St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and Integris Bass Baptist Health Center.

Thanks to everyone participating in this race.

Finally, thumbs up for a recent audit finding city of Enid finances “in good shape.”

Revenue is up, expenses are down and cash in the bank is on the rise. The independent auditor’s report of the city’s financial statements was for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012.

According to audit report data provided by the city’s finance office, Enid has operated “in the black,” with revenues exceeding expenses every year for the past 10 years.

Enid is well-positioned to grow through the current oil and gas boom and beyond, City Manager Eric Benson said.

That’s grounds for celebration.敦
