Letter: Gov. could have made better decision on NORCE, SORC

ENID, Okla. — It’s a shame when political leaders cannot take responsibility and make decisions. They get a committee, and that is all for what Gov. Mary Fallin wants.

They then vote to close both NORCE and SORC, and then take the blame for Gov. Fallin’s decisions.

Because of the pressure from both NORCE and SORC, the DHS committee decided to close both — no research or how it would affect clients at either place.

There are clients that possibly will not survive in a community home. They need help in everything they do. Many cannot do anything but walk a little and mumble sounds.

Many of the DHS staff, including Ed Lake, the director, take their orders from Gov. Fallin. Lake would not answer most of our questions when he was here.

I believe Gov. Fallin could have made a better decision if she had completed a thorough investigation of both places, i.e. which has the best and most service, has more useable buildings and the least cost to update buildings.

She should have come to check the clients and seen how these clients have lived there for 40 to 50 years; this is the only home they have ever known. The clients are supposed to have rights; I’m sure they would not choose to lose their home.

We very much appreciate Rep. Mike Jackson and Sen. Patrick Anderson, as well as commissioner Mike Peck for fighting for us.

I also ask every citizen of Enid to write a letter to the editor and Gov. Fallin just saying, “Yes, keep NORCE.” Thank you.
