Event to feature candidates for Enid City Commission posts

ENID, Okla. — Enid residents in three wards should attend a candidate forum Monday night so they can learn about the men who will represent them for the next four years on the city commission.

The forum hosted by the Enid News & Eagle will be 6 p.m. in commission chambers in the city administration building, 401 W. Garriott.

The forum will feature candidates in Wards 3, 4 and 6 on the city commission. Those running are: Ben Ezzell and Eldon Stephens in Ward 3; Rodney Timm and Loyd Kaufman in Ward 4; and Joey Meibergen, David Vanhooser and Mickey De La Cruz in Ward 6.

Wards 3 and 4 are on the east side of Enid, while Ward 6 covers the northwest part of the city. If you are unsure of which ward you are on, an online link to the wards can be found at http://www.meshekgis.com/enidwards.

This is an important election for Enid residents. Three seats on the commission — which has seven seats (six commissioners and mayor) — are up for grabs.

Given the issues the city is facing, people need to know who the candidates are and what they stand for. Our city is facing issues involving water, economic development, streets and a $50 million parks plan that is to be voted on in March.

City government is the area where people have the greatest impact. These are people elected to serve the residents of the city. They aren’t someone most people never meet who goes off to Washington, D.C., or the state Capitol in Oklahoma City.

These are our neighbors. They live among us and are supposed to represent us on the city commission.

That’s why this forum is important. You will get to know the candidates and hear from them. And, you will have the opportunity to get your questions asked.

We can’t guarantee all questions will be asked, but some of them will be.

Candidates also will be taking questions from a panel.

While we strongly encourage you to attend the forum, we understand not everyone will be able to. It will be broadcast live on PEGASYS, Enid’s public-access television station, and on radio on KGWA 960 AM.
