Two big thumbs up to Enid Public Schools Foundation for presenting grants to instructors

ENID, Okla. — Thumbs up to Enid Public School Foundation for its recent teacher grants presentations.

EPSF handed out 32 grants totaling $12,169 to 29 teachers across the district.

These grants are a great source of revenue for teachers, who use the money to purchase some fun and creative tools for their students.

EPSF presents grants twice a year, in the spring and fall.

Thumbs up to the Enid High School Big Blue Band, which marched in the 2012 McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago.

The band was one of 15 from across the country selected to march.

This honor is well-deserved by the band, which usually gets to wow the local crowd at football games and the Tri-State Music Festival.

The national exposure — the parade was televised — is great for the band, and for Enid.

Thumbs up to Frank Hakel, who very well may have recently saved some lives.

A substitute route driver for the News & Eagle, Hakel recently happened upon a house fire in Garber.

He saw embers from the burning structure blowing toward another house at about 12:30 a.m. Monday.

He managed to wake the family inside, who were asleep and did not know the danger they faced. Thankfully, they were OK, as was their house.

Thumbs down all around to the situation recently in Piedmont, where a police officer was fired after writing a mother a public urination ticket because of the actions of her 3-year-old son.

We think the officer overreacted in the first place. This was a 3-year old child, after all. But we also think the family could have used better judgment, too.

The boy could have been taken into the house to the bathroom rather than just drop his pants in the front yard.

We’re also not sure the officer deserved to be fired. Talked to and disciplined, yes.

Fired, well we’re not sure that was right.
