Enid Police Department offering tips to help people from being holiday victims

ENID, Okla. — It’s just about the time to open the official Christmas shopping season.

But, honestly, that season already has started.

With so many people out shopping we all need to be aware of those who are looking for an easy score. Rather than shop themselves, they are looking for targets of opportunity.

A purse left unattended in a shopping cart. Purchases left in plain sight in a car, whether it’s unlocked or locked. Those are targets of opportunity for people looking to rob you.

Enid Police Department offers some tips to help from becoming a victim of crime:

• Shop in the day if you can. If you shop at night, go in a group or at least with one other person.

• Try not to carry large amounts of cash. Carry your wallet or billfold in your front pocket, and don’t leave your purse unattended in a shopping cart.

• Put your purchases in the trunk or at least cover them up. Don’t leave them in plain sight.

• If you happen to lose your wallet or purse, report it immediately. Have your credit or debit cards canceled quickly to avoid someone using them.

It’s easy to become a victim if  you aren’t careful.

On the other hand, it’s also easy to avoid becoming a victim. All you have to do is use some common sense and follow a few basic safety rules.

Be safe and make sure the holidays are merry.
