Local parents, grandparents or simply residents interested in bettering the quality of life in Enid have an opportunity to get involved first-hand.
Enid Public Schools Board of Education has three board seats coming up for election in 2010. The seats are for Office 1, currently held by Mark Selix; Office 4, currently held by Willa Jo Fowler; and Office 5, currently held by Taylor Branstetter.
The filing period for these seats is Dec. 7-9 at Garfield County Election Board, and the election will be held Feb. 9.
There is no more important position in our community than leading our school district in the right direction. The Enid Public Schools district has many challenges ahead, including some real facility needs. It’s possible the current board will call a school bond election in the near future.
It’s been disheartening in the past school board elections in Enid have drawn so few candidates. Sometimes there is only the incumbent, one candidate or no candidates for these positions.
As Enid and other Garfield County communities move into the future, it’s important our public school systems be of the highest quality possible. That requires fresh thinking and a renewed commitment by local citizens to make their public school systems the best they can be.
We hope the Enid school board election draws several candidates and we hope other area school district board elections draw a multitude of candidates as well. The people always are better served when they have a choice in their school board elections.
Having a race gives candidates the opportunity to present their ideas and helps voting citizens have a better voice in selecting the path of their local school districts.
