City of Enid could save a lot of money on road work since drivers insist on bypassing the rules of the road

I would like to offer a suggestion for saving some money for the City of Enid. Living on the west side of Enid, I have many occasions to drive downtown or to the east side. My main route is usually Owen K. Garriott.

In my observations (and this is strictly unscientific), I have observed that 70-80 percent of those traveling from the west side to the east, drive in the inside lane, and I assume to eventually turn left.

My Oklahoma Driver’s Manual states on page 7-3 and I’ll paraphrase; keep to the right except when passing.

My solution for a public stimulus package would be to refrain from maintaining the right lane because it is seldom used. We would save repair materials and paint for a lane that is rarely if ever used by many traveling from Lowe’s or Wal-Mart to the east. See, you’re smiling; you have tried to get around these people, too.

Secondly, in the private sector, money could be saved in the large business parking lots. I’m a couple of weeks behind in my suggestion, because the lots in Sunset Plaza and Wal-Mart have just been striped, but maybe the owners could try a different approach next time.

My unscientific observation tells me that few people really pay attention to the striped lane markings. Just this morning, as I left McDonald’s on West Garriott heading south toward the mall, I was almost broadsided by a car cutting across the parking lot to get to Dillard’s.

My suggestion would be to simply forget the paint.

The sole purpose is to help control the flow of traffic so that we don’t have chaos when we are driving the lanes looking for a parking place.

No need to make lanes if people don’t drive in them. The mall, Lowe’s and Wal-Mart would all save money. See, I said this was a stimulus package.
