Community shines again as United Way tops goal

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to United Way and everyone involved in the organization’s annual fundraiser.

At the final report luncheon it was announced United Way of Enid and Northwest Oklahoma exceeded its goal of raising $730,000.

That is great news, especially considering the tough economic times we’re experiencing.

A big thanks to everyone who donated. United Way helps and influences a lot of people in our community, so the money is greatly appreciated.

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to Vance Air Force Base for receiving the Spirit of the Family Award.

The honor is given yearly by Community Development Support Association Smart Start Northwest Oklahoma.

Vance was honored for the way it supports its families and the way families at the base support the community through a variety of endeavors through volunteering.

Sometimes it’s hard to get the government to move in family friendly ways, but Vance has done it right.

This award is greatly deserved, and CDSA Smart Start Northwest Oklahoma is to be commended for recognizing outstanding efforts annually.

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to Food Share America, which helps people make ends meet during hard times.

The organization, a food purchasing co-op, is for anyone who wants to help stretch their food dollars.

Members are able to purchase different types of food packages or items a la carte. Some examples of available packages are: a produce package, fresh fruits and vegetables; a frozen package, frozen food; and a pantry package, dry and canned food.

It’s a good deal and we encourage people to get involved.

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to being true to your school.

Dr. Barry Pollard is the epitome of that saying. The Waukomis resident recently was named chairman of the Oklahoma State University Foundation board of trustees.

That post is just one in a long list of things Pollard does for his alma mater.

He founded OSU Medical Cowboys, a group of health care professionals who have set a goal of building a $3 million endowment to fund scholarships for 20 students in each graduating class. He also endowed a professorship in agribusiness and gives to several athletics programs. In addition, P&K Equipment, which he owns, funds two scholarships annually.

Congratulations to Pollard, a 1973 OSU graduate, for giving back.
