There are many ways to celebrate freedom in Enid

Today we celebrate our nation’s birthday.

It was 233 years ago the brave men of the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, thus pronouncing the United States of America a free country. Although the new nation had to fight a war with Great Britain to secure that freedom, the declaration remains a powerful document.

All these years later, we are in the midst of troubling times. A recession grips the country, causing widespread hardship as many people across the country have lost their jobs. There is a lot of uncertainty about what the future may hold.

But, even in the bad times we in the United States can celebrate today. We remain the beacon of freedom for the rest of the world. Oppressed people throughout the world look to the freedoms we have and yearn to enjoy them, too.

We encourage everyone to celebrate today.

Across northwest Oklahoma, communities have planned traditional fireworks displays and other fun, family events.

In Enid, Liberty Federal Savings Bank again has sponsored the fishing derby 6 a.m. to noon today at Meadowlake Park.

At night, Liberty Federal also will sponsor the fireworks display and Enid Symphony Orchestra performance.

The free concert, featuring Enid native and opera star Leona Mitchell, who will perform with the symphony, will begin at 8:30 p.m. at Meadowlake Park.

Whatever you choose and wherever you choose to do it, it’s time to celebrate America.
