Enid residents remember heritage

THUMBS UP

Although the weather didn’t cooperate, we are glad the people of Enid haven’t forgotten their heritage.

Many of the events for Cherokee Strip Days and Kenwood Golden Days festival were washed out, but we give organizers a thumbs up.

Cherokee Strip Days is a yearly event celebrating the founding of Enid in the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893. Kenwood Golden Days just started this year to celebrate the history of one of Enid’s oldest neighborhoods — as well as its future.

There were a lot of good, family oriented activities and music planned. We appreciate all the hard work that went into the planning.

THUMBS UP

While we wish it wasn’t necessary, we give a thumbs up to all the remembrances across the country marking the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

It is right to remember that day and to remember the people who lost their lives and the family members left to carry on.

We also want everyone to remember the men and women in the military who are in harm’s way protecting our country from the threat of terrorism.

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to the Wisdom Family Foundation for its generous gift to Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

The foundation gave $250,000 to Northwestern to endow a faculty chair position in art, giving new life to an academic program that was eliminated more than 20 years ago. The gift will allow the school to create an academic minor in art.

The gift is in honor of the late Grace Wisdom, a banker, community leader and art lover.

Once the donation is matched by Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education through its endowed chair program, the gift will have an impact of $500,000.

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to the Parents and Partners workshop scheduled by Enid Public Schools.

It will be 6-8 p.m. at Enid High School.

The goal is to help parents become more involved in their children’s education.

We hope parents will take the opportunity to participate and learn about a number of things, including the new Parent Portal, which makes students’ grades, progress and other information available over the Internet, and information about homework and a student’s transformation to junior high.

If you have school-age children, please plan to attend.

To participate, call 234-5270.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down to the perpetrators of three recent rural burglaries in Garfield County.

Authorities believe the burglaries may be related, and may be related as well to other burglaries in Noble and Logan counties.

Such crimes are tough to combat, given the location of the houses involved, but there are some things people can do to make it tougher for the criminals.

For one, people need to look out for each other. Neighbors need to keep an eye out on each other’s property. If they see anything suspicious or unusual, they need to call the authorities right away.

Garfield County Crime Stoppers can be reached at 233-6233, and Garfield County Sheriff’s Office can be reached at 237-0244.
