Miss Rodeo Oklahoma is moving to OKC

Enid is losing its last connection to the rodeo with the announcement the Miss Oklahoma Rodeo Scholarship Pageant will be moving to Oklahoma City this year.

Board members voted to move the pageant after three years in Enid.

“We saw an opportunity to improve the pageant and some great sponsorships in Oklahoma City,” said Keta Gray, a board member.

At one point, the Miss Oklahoma Rodeo Scholarship Pageant was close to the annual rodeo event held in Enid. However, there hasn’t been a rodeo in Enid going on three years now. The pageant has stayed and has drawn anywhere from 15 to 20 contestants.

Enid businesses have done their best to support the pageant; however, organizers feel the sponsorship opportunities are richer in Oklahoma City. They probably are right. After all, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum has come on as a sponsor. That kind of connection right there is a good tie-in to the rodeo pageant.

The loss of a rodeo to complement the pageant in Enid probably was one of the deciding factors in moving the pageant. There hasn’t been any activity to organize another rodeo in Enid since the Cherokee Strip Stampede PRCA Rodeo ended in 2004. It’s not a big surprise the pageant would eventually move away.

It’s important for the pageant to continue and grow. This scholarship pageant provides good opportunities for young women in Oklahoma to advance their education.

While we hate the loss of the pageant, we know many area girls benefit from it. It’s important for the pageant to continue, and if the best way for it to grow is to move to Oklahoma City, then that is what should be done.

We wish Oklahoma City and future contestants the best.
